[FEATURE REQUEST] Dolby Vision support for MKV [IMPLEMENTED]

I’m not a dev

We already support Atmos and some variants of Dolby Vision on the 2019 Nvidia Shield, officially. This is another variant, in another container. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah sorry, but close enough.
But seeing any Plex Employee involved (dev or not) still bodes well, that Plex is interested in making this happen.
It does or it doesn’t happen natively in Plex. Right now it’s working fine in Plex for Kodi.

As I mentioned on the MakeMKV forums, I’m simply there as an individual, not as a representative of Plex. I just happen to be using the same username, and both my forum accounts here and there pre-date my employment by Plex by several years. So I’m certainly personally interested, but that isn’t necessarily representative of what Plex may do

Totally understood.

Now that creating MKV with DV doesn’t involve going through several programs and easy as few clicks on MakeMKV, being able to play it on Plex would be great. I saw some people experimenting with sideloaded APK of exoplayer to play the files via Kodi. Hope to see Plex support this format soon.

In the mean time, I guess I’ll wait and work on re-remuxing Dolby Vision discs.

Scroll up. I did a video showing Kodi with the Plex addon launching MKVs with Dolby Vision. Hopefully it’s only a matter of time for when this is made native in Plex.

Why is plex addon for kodi necessery if we have to use exoplayer as external player ?

I mean why are 3 separate apps needed ?
Wouldn’t it be kodi and exoplayer enough ?

@mczuzlak I think you forgot this is a Plex forum :joy:

You can do it without Plex, but this was for people to see that it’s possible to get Dolby Vision working in a form of a Plex environment. To basically demo that it’s entirely possible- not necessary though.

Some people want to access their Plex library the way they organized it using Plex Media Server and don’t want to deal with mounting drives or any other setup that using Kodi may entail.

You’re right, you don’t need Plex to do this, it’s just a nice option for some until Plex adds this feature to their official app.

Kodi 19.x “Matrix” - Alpha 1

Android:
Static HDR10 support for all source types (if supported by the device)
Dynamic Dolby Vision HDR support for streaming services (if supported by the device)

Sadly this doesn’t support MKV yet as noted by a user on the MakeMKV forum. Streaming services only for now.

Plex for Android (at least) already supports some variants of Dolby Vision, just not in MKV. Our apps for Android, iOS/tvOS, and (I believe) smart TVs already support HDR10 when the device supports it

But are you working to make it happen with the MKV?
Thank you

It is possible to make this happen (I’m sure @DaveBinM saw my post above with it running in Kodi w/ the Plex addon)

As I’ve said before, I’m not a developer, and Plex does not typically share any plans for upcoming work

That’s why it’s a feature request lol. If it happens then I guess you guys would just announce it

Just showing that it’s possible, we’re all just here hoping you guys take it into consideration. :innocent:

Yes, I read too. My level of knowledge was that Kondi still cannot play Dolby Vision. I also find it strange why kodi explicitly mentions this in the new version. I thought that would be the first step in the right direction.

Yes that is known
