Feature Request: Merge different versions

Hi,
Shouldn’t it be possible to make a feature that merges different versions of movies? I have several movies where I have a 3D version, a normal version and an extended version. It would be nice if these three could be merged so when I press play it asks me which version I would like to play (like it does when there are other resolutions to play).

Best Regards,
Morten

Yes! I have been trying to find out if this was already possible and I think this would be great. I previously thought it had done this because I recall seeing a screen asking which version to play but maybe it was because they were different resolutions, although I don’t typically have multiple copies in different resolutions.

It gets really frustrating seeing the same movie multiple times in the library cluttering things up: Theatrical cut, Unrated, 3D, Director’s cut, all the same movie. It would be fantastic if it would just group them together and you can pick which one to play when you start it. Right now it just plays the first one. I don’t know how difficult it would be to change the regex that parses the filename to automatically recognize different versions, especially given that there really isn’t a standard naming scheme and some versions are uniquely named like the X-Men: Days of Future Past “Rogue Cut”. But even manually naming the versions is something.

PS: I suggest you edit your title to include “Feature Request” at the beginning.

Yes you can, but both versions must be listed in the same library. You cannot merge between 2 different libraries. From Plex Web, go to the library where the movies you want are. Hit the multi-select tool (empty box icon with checkmark) along the left, then select the 2 movies, then the last icon … on the left, select merge.

However, Plex will not offer you version names, only the resolution, so it might be hard to tell which version is which.

Right, but like I was saying, it doesn’t ask me which one to play. It just plays the first one. It used to though but they were both the same resolution so I had no idea which one I was playing.

Getting the choice depends on the client. What are you using?

I was using the Samsung App. It used to ask but now it doesn’t. Nor does the Plex webui.

I don’t know w about the Samsung app but for the web there is a setting. Setting / web / player / automatically selected resolution

You can’t do it. The thing you are talking about is the option to merge to files with different resolutions. NOT different editions of a movie. It does not solve my wish.

You can merge anything, even 2 totally unrelated movies. The only problem is that for playback you can’t tell what you are playing because the options only tell you the resolution, but you can merge them.

Yes, and then it is not an answer to this feature request.

Technically, your request was to merge them, which you can do. What you want is a better display so when you hit play, you can tell them apart. Just trying to make it clear so others understand the request.

Edit - I agree with you on that part. There needs to be better display of these merged files.

I think that would solve a lot of issues. That was you could merge anything you wanted under one title and then set custom names under that title. It can be used in numerous scenarios.

Is this not a option yet?

It is. If you just hit the play button, then the client may just select the most appropriate version. However, most clients should also have an option to play a specific version. Which client are you using?
