Feature request: per user bandwidth limits

Plex any update on this?

they just released plex arcade they arent even going to think about this… they have so many bugs with that new addition it will take a year to iron out… not to mention I dont like having it running on the media server… too much power taken from the transcode server

Lol at asking for updates. If this ever happens, it’ll take several years. I may switch to emby or jellyfin considering how slow the Plex devs are at implementing feature requests.

Hello Plex?

Any update on this? Only been open since 2017

I 100% agree.
We Plex Pass users don’t ask for much.
We didn’t ask for PlexTV (their commercial version)
We didn’t ask for Plex Arcade
We didn’t ask for so, so much, but they are assuming they need to build out packages of other content to exist so companies who are afraid they are “enabling piracy” won’t out-and-out attack them!
For me? My library is 100% mine. I bought for it all and/or recorded it from my Plex DVR (yes, I love that feature). Don’t assume everyone who has huge libraries illegally got them!
I’ve been collecting videos from the VHS era onward and they’re mine.
Enable me to share them as I am legally able to!
PLUS you’d THINK Plex would realize a per-user-bandwidth-limit is something the recording industry would LOVE!

+1 for this feature bump

I actually recently purchased Plex Pass Lifetime for this option specifically, then realize that the limit is Global rather than per user.

And this has been requested since 2017…

I’ve looked into alternatives, like custom Tautulli Script, but nothing came up besides Kill Stream

Ideally, this should be presented as a per-user option, but per group of users seems to be an additional layer that would be nice.
Not limiting the admin to the same bandwidth as everyone else also seems “normal”.

Might be assuming here, but given that Plex is such a big community of users, 147 votes are a very little number to spend time implementing this request, is it because people asking this have a home plex server?

+1 to this feature. I’d love to limit bandwidth to other people on my server, but make it so I can have full bandwidth without having to go to my server page every time i’m away from home. even if i’m watching shows on my lunch.

Yes, this is a very good feature. In China, our upload is only 30M=3M/s. When multiple people watch, everyone does not have a good experience. Limiting everyone’s bandwidth separately is a good solution. Both jellyfin and emby can be customized for everyone. I hope the official can consider joining. . .

Bumped and voted

This seems reeeally easy to implement. Could it be our lucky day soon? Really old, popular, easy feature request that could be an easy win for the blessed Plex dev who takes this on. Extremely surprised it’s gone this long without being implemented with so many people wanting, or arguably needing this.

+1 For this and to bump this feature request again. I had considered using Emby for this feature, but stuck with Plex.

Pleeeeeeeeeease

I have mediocre upload speed and a monthly data cap. Some of my users would appreciate better quality, and some wouldn’t notice either way.

Would love to see this implemented. Up until recently I had only granted access to my non-4K libraries and enforced a 12Mbps global limit, but I want one of my users to have access to my 4K library without a bandwidth limit. It’s quite impractical to now ask every other user to set an appropriate limit on each of the devices they use.

This request has been here for a few months shy of 8 years - and due to the fact that Plex has remote apps, I’m very surprised this hasn’t been implemented.

The problem is, I’ve set bandwidth limits on my server, but unless I go and set limits to each client that is connected remotely, then all it means is that the clients request full bitrate, and all the client gets is server buffering if the bitrate exceeds the limit. Just like adding users/friends to share your library - one should be able to set transcoding options to line up with the stream server-side and then toss the requested stream to the user… in other words it shouldn’t be dependent on their stream settings. Then you have an easy way to allow older players and various devices because you are sending a real-time transcoded stream to them by the server that adjusts accordingly. Say I want to set my upload limit to 20Mbits, and I have two friends connected and registered to share my library - the server can look at that and do the math, then if one of them requests a video it can toss out the appropriate sized stream (20/2 = 10Mbit per user). Come on folks, let’s roll this out.

A post was merged into an existing topic: Limit Concurrent Streams Per Account

Wow ,nearly missed the fact that I had +1’d this myself over 5y ago and here were are still without this feature. Doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to implement, really puzzling how it hasn’t been done.

Bump. It’s been 8 years!
