I’ve only been using my Plex Media Server for about 4 months now, but I love it.
It would be great if there was a trimmed-down version of the Plex Media Server (really just the video transcoder) which could be installed on additional machines. These additional machines could be referenced by the primary Plex Media Server as encoding slaves.
This would allow a Plex Media Server to scale horizontally instead of having to buy a bigger/better CPU since getting a better CPU gets very expensive very quickly and has an upper limit.
So in effect you want to create a networked cluster for transcoding purposes? Sounds like a good idea, especially if you, like me, have some more horsepower sitting around the house when you’re not at home.

Yes, exactly.
My NAS has an Intel i3 and it can transcode 3 videos at once without lagging.
I’d love to be able to build a cheap Linux box, or a few, to transcode several streams at once.
It’s always cheaper to scale horizontally than vertically especially since you can top out in CPU power quickly.
