After many years of using Apache web server services via hacked third party applications, Plex finally swoops in to the rescue! I have been ecstatic with all the new features and upgrades your team has put together. This is by far the best Media Server product on the market to date! As a media enthusiast/connoisseur, I delight in flexibility and control. Auto-pulling metadata was pure GENIUS! You have saved me hours for the future.
I would like to propose a couple of additions to your feature request list however.
1. Sub-libraries under movies & tv shows. For example, I have 2 folders synced to my "Movies" library in Plex. I would like to through the web interface create sub-libraries under movies. I have several people connected to my library via shared libraries and I want them to have access to only some of my movies but I don't want to split the movies folders up on my server. Instead if I could create a sub-library and select which movies go in those libraries then I could have a library for each person connected to my server. On a second note, using sub-libraries to create parental controls. I want to have a folder that I can move my kids movies into so I can allow them to use Plex without my constant supervision and having access to every movie on my server. I understand I could re-organize my server into separate folders for this purpose but with the number of movies I have, it would take a very long time.
2. Password protected libraries. The ability to password protect certain libraries. This way I can share my entire server with a family and give the parents the password so the kids can only watch Plex with the parents direct permission/supervision. On a second note, with a password protected library, I can lock a library at any time while I do major updates or address issues with the server. Password protection can also be handy for specific media files (i.e. parental controls).
Once again, I absolutely love Plex and I use it explicitly because of all the fine work your team has done. I hope to be a helpful participant in this endeavor.
Wow.... no replies!!! I too would like to password protect shares. I have 14 different folks that I have shared with. 8 different sections including some R rated TV and movie sections that are segregated into their own sections. Some of the folks I share with have younger kids and it would be awesome if they could apply a password to that section locally or I could apply a share from the administrative standpoint. I really don't want 8 year olds revelling in Game of Thrones.... :-)
Right now I use sneaker-net to give them the movies/TV on a thumb drive. :-)
We are a few families that using one server with redudancy storage and so on and every family has a personal media that does not like to show everyone. I have no idea is that possible via DLNA, but PIN protection of library is very simple to use even with TV remote.
I haven't come across the idea of sub-libraries earlier. Maybe I missed it or it's indeed a brand new idea. I suspect it's handier to post that idea in the section Feature & Bug Voting
I've been waiting for this feature for awhile. My toddler is now just learning how to use the remote and I don't want him browsing the violent movies. I could setup another account but that becomes a pain to manage between 3 roku's and a plex app. Also, my fiance and me watch movies and TV shows together a lot so I want the TV shows that are "watched" to be the same between all of our accounts and using the same account is the best way to do that.
Password protection would be great. I use plex primary on gaming consoles, and the game controller is not good for entering long usernames and passwords. Entering a 4 digit PIN with a controller would not be too difficult, so I think a PIN would be enough for most people in my situation. If you take into account I use 18+ character passwords for security, trying to enter that using a controller every time I want to switch users is untenable.
+1 for password protected. I have some libraries that are on my home plex account but I don’t want kids to walk up and be able to play them. Maybe a quick pin or something that is easy to type in for a connected device.
