Feature Request - Passcode Lock/Private Feature for Individual Libraries or User Only Libaries

I have Plex setup for the family, however there are private libraries i would like to create which no one else has access to. I would very much either like to create libraries for individual users (media will not show up for any other user including the primary account holder) or i would like to be able to lock/make private libraries on the primary user’s account.

The issue i run into currently is for a user to login, they first have to login under the primary account then switch to their user account. This means that even with a primary account 4 digit passcode, they still have access to all files until they log into the individual account.

Also i have users that would like to backup phone personal photos to a private folder and access them through plex. Once again they do not want other family members to have access to these including myself. Having the ability to setup folders either way as mentioned above should solve this issue.

Some of what you ask for can already be done.
Being a PlexPass member you can create a PlexHome with Managed Users. Managed by you, the admin.
Also, PlexHome works for regular Plex users. Create an account for your family members and invite them to your PlexHome server.

Adding Friends is another way to do it.
Friends can also be family. Create an account for your family members and invite them to your server.
Each family member could have access to only one library(if that’s your choice).

Either way you(the admin) will have complete control over what libraries are shared and who sees them.

That is how i’m setup and that’s also the problem. I have complete control over what libraries everyone can access. However for them to Log in, the first have to login under the main plex account then switch to a user account. This means they have full access to all libraries until they are switched to their user account.

I would like the ability to lock individual libraries so no on can open them without the pass code. I would want the ability to set a code for each so i could choose to use the same code or set different ones.

This would also mean that if i was to setup a personal library account attached to someone’s personal photos. I could let them set the passcode for that library while logged into the main account - allowing them to have access to personal files that no one else has.

If a user is showing someone their plex account and does not want them to access a certain library, this would fix that.

So an example of what i am talking about: Let’s say i have a photo file that contains scanned/downloaded copies of my bank/stock statements. If i have that set up as a library in my account. Then once again, any my my plex home user’s can access that library when they log in, until they are switched over to their account (which locks them out of the admin account since it the requires a 4 digit login to switch to). Not only would i want to lock that library from other users while they log in. I would also want to lock that library from most of the people i would let browse my plex account. While i used finical information in this example, there are plenty of personal or embarrassing photos/videos you may want to have access to but to limit who gets to browse them.

Finally because of the desire to keep this library private: the file names, or file previews should not show up in any browsing screen (recently added/played, ect) except for when you access the locked library.

Then PlexHome is not for you. Adding Friends is the way to go. No one will have you admin login and no friends will see your bank statements unless you give them share access to it.

Again, PlexHome is not for you. Also, you can remove the library from showing OnDeck.

Wait a minute. I though you can invite regular Plex users to your PlexHome and they won’t need your admin credentials, just theirs. @OttoKerner, is this correct?

Although you can do that too, you won’t even need to invite them into your Home.
Just share your server (or only some select libraries) with them.

The old-fashioned way:

Remove the Plex App and use Plex Web. It will always start with the user question.
You can enhance Restriuctions with ratings. I have two kids using my library N and M. M is older than N. At the details of any movie you can enter any rating you want. Eg: N4 and M9
So N can see anything with an N4 rating and M with an N4 or M9 rating, in the libraries they have access to.
Create different libraries for sensitive stuff. Even if they have access to it by sharing, the (absence of a) rating will prevent it showing up.

Every Plex app will do that if you disable the ‘Automatic Logon’ preference.

Ok, just tested that with the Plex App on Windows 10.

  • If you uncheck “remember me” you need to login with your plex account and it will automatically login to the main (admin) account.
  • If you check the “remember me” option the Plex App will open to the server based user selection screen and bypass the Plex credentials. And my guess is that that is the situation PettrucciMain is looking for.

No. It will present you the ‘user selector’ screen, where you pick among the members of your Plex Home.

Not exactly.
It will only bypass the credential input because you typed these in before.

Step 1) You connect the plex app to your account. You don’t log out afterwards!

Step 2) you either check or uncheck the ‘Automatic logon’
With ‘Automatic Logon’ checked, the plex app will go straight into the user account it was in before
i.e. the security depends on the access to the computer and/or the Windows user account.

With ‘Automatic Logon’ cleared, the plex app will present the user selector and will ask for the Pin if you click on a user who has a PIn.

You (obviously) are right. I found out I was using the Chrome Plexapp. Installing the Plexapp from the Windowsstore instantly gave the server-user selection screen. My bad, sorry for the confusion.

You should get rid of that thing. It is seriously outdated now.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (Plex Home / Friends, share restrictions)
