According to https://code.google.com/p/google-cast-sdk/issues/detail?id=192 AC3 passthrough is now possible with the Chromecast.
I would like Plex to support this feature.

Yes, please! So much easier to use the plex app and chromecast as opposed to hooking up a laptop with VLC every time I want to enjoy proper AC3 streams.
According to the release notes, 9.11.0 has that option.

Ignore. Not thinking correctly.
That post states:
That seems to indicate XBox 1, not Chromecast?
Nevertheless, searching the forums led me to 2 small changes in the Chromecast.xml file that makes this work, too. I would still prefer to make this work out of the box as many users are probably not too technically savvy.
Oops. Sorry. You are correct. The change to the xml is what you need. Glad you found it.
Can we have an option "Enable Dolby Digital on Chromecast"? Similar to the option "... on Apple TV"?
I would really like to avoid having to edit the XML every time there is a new version of PMS.
It would even be better if it could be auto-detected. Theoretically that's possible to detect capabilities of the receiver over hdmi. But I'm not sure if the chromecast supports this and if such an api is exposed.
But I'm all in favor to avoid editing the chromecast.xml manually :-)
Proper and automatic AC3 support for the Chromecast is long overdue.
Pretty please?
Was this ever implemented?
We’re still waiting. It’s too long. Please plex, tell us why it is so long ? There is a problem with this feature ?
When is this going to happen? I can’t even direct stream anymore on my Chromecast. Feature regression.
Please make this happen. It’s been far too long.
