I’m trying to find a way to use Handbrake (or any other encoding tool) to encode a 7.1 TrueHD source such that it can be played back in full 7.1 via my Roku4. Despite a teaser that the Roku4 would support TrueHD passthru, it seems not to be the case. The only 7.1 format that I’m aware of the Roku supporting is EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus). Handbrake (nightly build) can passthru EAC3 from the source to the encoded file, but I can’t transcode from TrueHD to EAC3. The only alternative I see is for Plex to save the day and provide the transcode. It looks like ffmpeg can encode EAC3. It looks like VLC can decode TrueHD, so I assume there’s a free codec available?? So maybe Plex could do the transcode without requiring any fancy licenses and proprietary software (somewhere between expensive and unobtainium)? Thanks!
