I recently got this error when i played one of the movies and idea?
Plex could not direct play or direct stream the video for some reason.
Plex cannot transcode DVp5 video. It has no license from Dolby to do so. So, when it cannot direct play/stream the video, playback fails, and Plex displays the “color space not supported” message.
So until now theres no fix?
Do you mean this just started happening? Like a file that previously worked?
What are you trying to play it on.
I have the same issues, plays, buts its got a green and pink tint to the video both on LG TV G4 and the Windows 11 Plex Media Client when force direct play. What gives?
If I use JellyFin, it plays perfect. Is it time for me to move away from PLEX which I’ve supported and loved by many many many years…
I have this problem, but its just the fact that we’re able to get these files and the ability for plex and the devices how to handle them. If you have a DV capable tv, playback shouldn’t be an issue. I also think the people who create these files mess up the meta data which doesn’t help.
I believe the problem is Plex does not want to pay for the license to decode DV.
The original reply was correct and I would not really jump through any hoops expecting Plex to decode DV.
In defense of Plex here- very few pieces of software have a license to decode DV. It is expensive and a private technology controlled by Dolby.
More likely that Dolby will not grant one at any price.
DVp5 is used by the streaming services, which use DRM to protect the stream.
Were Dolby to grant Plex a license to transcode DV video, it would be tacitly approving theft of streaming services.
This could upset the streaming services to the point they abandon DV. The revenue loss for Dolby would be many times what Plex might pay for the license to transcode DV video.
This is true. I suspect Dolby does not want people to easily decode DV video.
Some video files online still use it but it’s only for the very very few devices that can somehow play those files.
I suggest everyone else just stick to the HDR10 format for HDR support on PC.
But if using direct play, then the TV should decode it? Something is broken with direct play in the client.
Your TV gets a signal but the device playing the file has to decode it.
I’ve heard someone claim a 4k Amazon fire stick Plex client can play DoVi5 but I dont know.
DoVi5 is for streaming shows and afaik does not have a fallback hdr10 stream and afaik Plex cannot decode DoVi5.
DVp5 does not have a HDR10/10+ layer. DVp7 & p8 do have a HDR10/10+ layer.
To play DV video with Plex:
- The TV and the streaming device (if used) must both support DV.
- The video must direct play/direct stream (no video transcoding due to bandwidth limits, etc.).
- The video must be correctly muxed into the MKV/MP4 container (unsure if TS also works).
- The client must support DV video in said container.
If the above are not met, then (a) Plex will play the HDR10/10+ layer if available; or (b) Plex will play the DV video, but it will have incorrect colors; or (c) Plex will not play the video and display the “color space not supported” message.
I’m not aware of a list/spreadsheet/etc. showing how each Plex clients handles Dolby Vision. In general, if the device claims to support DV from Netflix, et al, then it will handle DV with Plex.
As always, there are a few quirks. An example is the Plex LG client. LG TVs support Dolby Vision. However, it must be in a MP4 container. When playing a DVp5 video in a MKV container, it will direct play, but the colors are wrong, with everything in various shades of pink and green. The same video in a MP4 container correctly plays Dolby Vision.
I have a Roku TV with DV and those DVp5 files are still discolored. I hadn’t thought about the container, but I’ve also come across media that’s labeled DVp5 in metadata and detected as such by Plex but displays correctly on a samsung tv. There are also old posts on the net instructing people how they can use handbrake to transcode DV files using 12bit or other various settings which doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I think a big problem is the source, middlemen and labeling of these files.
I’ll have to try putting some of these files on a USB drive and playing them directly from my TV to see if it correctly displays the colors. Maybe double check the files with media info too.
