File name and Title don't match

When I change the name of a movie file so that Plex can scan and grab metadata for it, I follow the guidelines in the instructions. Even though I follow those guidelines, a large number of the movies show up in my Dashboard with the original filename.

For example:
Original Filename in Finder (where the rip software saves it) - Suicide.Squad.2016.1080p.handbrake.mp4
New Filename in Finder (before moving it to library folder) - Suicide Squad (2016).mp4
Title and Sort Title in Plex - Suicide.Squad.2016.1080p.handbrake.mp4

The only way I’ve found to correct the issue is to manually edit the Titles on each movie in Plex from a web browser. There are many files from years ago that used a different naming format that show up in the wrong location alphabetically even though the file name doesn’t still have the prefix from the rip software. I don’t even know where Plex would be getting that original filename info.

Is there a setting somewhere to tell Plex to use the file name rather than whatever metadata it currently uses?

It sounds like as if it uses the tags set on the file itself, remove them before moving them to Plex or place the Local media agent at the bottom.

Your problem are embedded ‘Title’ meta tags.

Do the same action also in
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie

One of Plex’s major abilities is to provide you with the “Pretty Name” for your media just as it’s intended.

You can force a name in the metadata tag “Name” in the file but you might not get any metadata at all.
You can also use ‘Folder View’ if you want to see the raw names.

What you’re describing might be better served by just setting up a DLNA server, for as antiquated as DLNA is, and living with what it provides.
