File Names NOT Metadata

I have looked at MANY people who have posted about this and maybe I simply have not found the one that actually answers my question. I want Plex to sort files (particularly Music) by the file names I have given it and display the file name accordingly instead of scanning metadata. All the responses I have seen in regards to this topic is, “Just edit the ID3 or Metadata” or “Set it to scan personal metadata” If this option is not available on Plex to simply organize by file name, I would like to make the case as to why this should be option that is added. Everyone has their own preference as to who there data is stored and organized. Many, like myself, only need a few things; Artist (folder), Album (folder), Filename (organized how I choose). People know what their content is and all the info under the hood could be a jumbled mess and it doesn’t matter. Why? Because right on the screen, there it is, Artist (folder), Album (folder), Filename (organized how I choose). Instead of someone like myself having to go through the literally tens of thousands of files and edit them (Yes, even with ID3 tag software), Plex could just add some code to say, Sort/display filename vs. Metadata. Some in this community and at Plex might say what I propose is outdated, against how Plex sees itself working, or simply misguided. I don’t believe so and I don’t believe I’m the only one. If there is anyone out there who hear’s my plea and genuinely thinks my points are valid, then can we push this through and make it happen. Plex, You will have my $120 for lifetime access if this gets done. You will have it if already is and I don’t know it. Thank You

I agree with you 100% I’m new to Plex. It has a lot of potential but also has some severe if not obvious limitations. One is how music is sorted (or not sorted). I have a gazillion mp3s that can be sorted by filename ( all selections in each folder are numbered - 001, 002, etc). When I realized that Plex had no option to sort by filename I went and added track numbers in Windows file properties, and Plex apparently doesn’t see the track number either. Very disappointing. I’ve tried refreshing metadata and scanning library files to no avail. This sucks.

Anyone else out there hearme on this?

have you tried folder view in combination with the Personal Media Artist / Personal Media Album agents for your library?

(or the other respective Personal ... agents for other media types)

Plex does use track numbers.

Using filenames instead of tags is a leftover from the 1990s, it also makes more powerful features like smart playlists & advanced navigation (filter by Genre, Track Artists, Release Year, etc) a lot harder since everyone uses their own file naming conventions. Most advanced/large-scale music library software has moved away from this approach and to be honest, I don’t really see it coming back.

The positive thing is, if you structured your filenames and folders well, a mass-tagger (MP3Tag, TagScanner, Tag&Rename, Kid3, Picard, etc) will very quickly populate all this info into your tags in a one-time process.
