File naming with : in title

Server Version#: 1.13.5.5332
Player Version#:

I think I have a greater than 99% auto match success rate but there are a few times I just can’t seem to get it and I have to manually match. I want it to auto match based on file names so if I have to redo my library or setup a second server I don’t have sort through this again.

There are a number of movies that have characters that are not permitted in Windows file names, like : and ?. For a question mark I usually just remove it and for the : I often use a - but I am now realizing that perhaps that wasn’t very smart. What is the best way to deal with a : in a movie name?

For example, as I have it named the matching to the correct movie has a confidence sore of < 50%.

My library is set to use:
Scanner: Plex Movie Scanner
Agent: Plex Movie

Plex Movie is set to use IMDB. The IMDB name for this title is:
Lego DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain (2017)

My file name with path is: \LEGO DC Super Hero Girls - Brain Drain (2017)\LEGO DC Super Hero Girls - Brain Drain (2017) - (FI 1080p NF WEBRip [x264] DDP 6Ch).mkv

Also, is there a method to assist with the matching, like having an nfo file in the folder with the imdb url to the film? It would be great if Plex could do such a thing as well as use a text file in a tv shows folder to let it know to match by dvd order instead of tv air date.

Thanks in advance for whatever info you toss my way.

I just omit all punctuation and it seems to be fine. I have the same movie you used in your example and I just have it named:

p:\plex\movies\LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Brain Drain 2017 720p WEB-DL DD5.1 H.264.mkv

That’s correct… just drop any punctuation!
But to avoid collisions with the official naming conventions put the release year in brackets - also add square brackets around the technical information (if you need to keep them at all); Plex will ignore information in square brackets.

p:\plex\movies\LEGO DC Super Hero Girls Brain Drain (2017) [720p WEB-DL DD5.1 H.264].mkv

Thanks guys, no punctuation and square brackets for technical info. The movie matched just fine once I removed the -.

i use a app called filebot that helps a lot with this, i can drop in tons of movies or shows and it will change all the file names to readable ones by plex, it removes unreadable punctuation too
