FIles not indexed or showing up in Plex

Maybe it’s available and I just don’t see it…but it would be a GREAT feature for Plex to list the video files that it skipped, ignored…did NOT index and the reason WHY. This way, it would tell us whether or not it was a naming issue or something else. Any ideas?

Most of the time a file that is not found or is found incorrectly is named poorly for Plex. Also if it is a TV show then many times the structure is in error.

Without knowing exactly how the problem file(s) are named and how the library is structured and what type of library is involved people here cannot help much.

As far as a list of “skipped” videos is is very rare that anything like a movie actually gets skipped, usually it is not identified correctly and gets added as a movie of a different name than you expect.

Also if a TV show library encounters what looks like a movie, ie has no SxxEyy part, it will usually be skipped. In a movie library files with such a part in the filename will also often get skipped.

For Movies I use “MovieName (year) (IMBD ID).ext.” The IMDB ID is not really needed but it seems to help with many like named files getting correct names.

For TV shows it is a little more complex:

TV Shows <- The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 <- just like Season 01
____________Season 03 <- and so on for each season

____________Season 00 <- or “Specials”
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special

Note: the eXX part of the specials must match EXACTLY what is found in TheTVDB

You can try other setups BUT Plex is very picky about TV show structure and it is best not to fight the great Plexisaurus.

I do not think Plex needs to provide any “skipped” file info because there will be no skipping if the files are named correctly except for some of the more esoteric types of videos.

WebTools/FindMedia is what you want

Thanks Dane. Glad you provided a solution.

I have a very very large Library. It is extremely time-consuming to go through absolutely everything to check it. Plex is great, but everything could use Improvement. Sorry you feel different but my suggestion for an update that tells the user of any files it was unable to read and catalog was for Plex the company not for other users… Not looking for the opinion of people that don’t share the pain of my problem. If you don’t have a large Library like I do, it would be easy to go through and fix them.

I have a very large library (over 4000 movies and over 30000 TV episodes) and I don’t care if you are not looking for my opinion. You posted to a public forum and everybody can and should express their opinion if they have one.

As far as fixing the file names and structure goes there are several tools that make it VERY easy. I use FileBot. Once you have the naming right Plex will miss so few files that a tool like you suggest is unneeded.

I do not want Plex to waste their time on a feature like this that would have very little use.

There are plugins, as have been mentioned, that will do the deed but plugins are going away and it is so much easier to just name the files correctly for Plex if Plex is what you want to use.

One more thing about FileBot. Recently I decided to add the IMDB id to all my movies and used FileBot to do it. It took less than 30 minutes to process all 4000+ of my movies so I think the time to fix things should not be an issue.

Filebot…got it. Thanks for the suggested resolution. Very helpful instead of the self-centered business advice for Plex which YOU nor I run. You might want to consider that other people could benefit from it instead of pushing your opinion because you are not directly helped by it. Thinking of others and how to better help them is a good rule of thumb for EVERYONE to follow…you did that when you suggested Filebot and gave instructions…again, thank you.
