Files with both HDR10+ & DoVi Profile 8.1 metadata show blank/black screen

the fire stick does not switch to hdr10 on movie with profile 7?

with the ccwgtv 4k i can play profil 7 movie but i can’t rewind, fast forward and resume. the movie can only be played from the beginning.

The 2021 4K Max doesn’t.
The old regular 4K does.

ok it’s weird that the most expensive version is worse for that kind of file. It’s because of the different hardware?

Yes, 4K is also able to tonemap HDR locally, while the 4K Max doesn’t.

I am very appreciative to the Plex team for addressing this and can’t wait for it to hit the public/general release!

Any chance we can get this other long-standing critical bug fixed now too?

I’ve submitted a number of critical bugs on the forum, but this one  is the worst of them. Once it is addressed, Android devices should be able to press the play button and have videos play most of the time again (high bar to clear ).

Thanks for your work! Beta works perfectly

Sounds like both the blank screen and multi-version issue were both resolved in the public/general release today:

Thank you @sixones!

Hello all… long time lurker, first time poster. I wanted to contribute my findings with the newest v9.28.0. Up until now I have been running v9.16.2.38798 on my Sony A80CK TV w/Google TV. After reading this post regarding the loss of DoVi playback when upgrading to v9.17.0.38861, my DoVi files would fall back to basic HDR. A changelog note stated “Player: fallback to HDR when DoVi profile isn’t supported.” I did not have the black screen problem when files w/HDR10+ were played when using the internal Plex app on my TV downloaded from the Play Store.

After regressing to v9.16.2.38798 all my DoVi files played correctly again in any format i.e. v7, v8, and either/or w/HDR10+ metadata included or not. At that point I turned Auto Updates off to prevent the app from updating.

After following this thread for a while and reading about this recent fix, I upgraded to the newest v9.28.0 offered from the Play Store on my Sony TV. After upgrading I find that all my v7 files, including those w/HDR10+ metadata fall back to basic HDR again. My v8 files, whether with/without HDR10+ metadata play correctly in DoVi.

My conclusion is that although your fix to strip HDR10+ metadata from v8 files works correctly now, all my v7 files including those with HDR10+ metadata still fall back to basic HDR. Something happened between v9.16.2 and v9.17.0 up until now to prevent v7 files w/or without HDR10+ from being played correctly in DoVi causing them to fallback to HDR, at least on my Sony TV.

I am hoping this fix can be applied to all v7 files as well, since v9.16.2.38798 plays everything correctly, for me anyway. So I’ve gone back to v9.16.2.38798 for now and everything is back to normal. Hope my post is not too long winded (too late). Thanks as always for all your hard work in making Plex a great program!

Plex for Android 9.28.0.3132-beta fixed the playback issue for me on Firestick 4K Max.

This is my first time installing a beta (had to uninstall the official app first to get this to install)… I presume it will never auto update with firestick? I do have plex pass.

This is also happening on Apple TV 4K 3rd gen (2022).

amazon take too long to update their apps. It’s been a week since the update was released on the chromecast and we’re still waiting…

This 9.28 update fixes one of the biggest issues on the firestick 4k max, I hope we won’t have to wait another month for the update to arrive.

This is happening because we’ve found multiple devices that will crash when playing DoVi p7, as such we block DoVi p7 from working, except on the NVIDIA SHIELD or Chromecast with Google TV (or the device itself says it supports profile 7). If you can play something from your Sony TV that uses DoVi p7 and then grab the app logs, I can add the Sony TV to our allowlist for DoVi p7. Steps for fetching the logs are available here; https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

Hello again… please excuse the delay in my reply. Do I fetch the log from v9.16.2.38798 that plays DoVi v7 correctly, or the newest v9.30 that falls back to HDR? Thanks for your help…

I’ve sent you both for your review. Thanks again!

What streaming device are you using or are you using Android directly on your Sony Google TV? Are you confident the Sony TV you’re using actually supports Profile 7?

My experience has been that many devices claim to support Profile 7, but don’t actually play it back correctly. Even the NVIDIA Shield has significant color errors with Dolby Vision Profile 7 & 8 that make it unusable as an accurate playback device.

I’m using the internal Plex app downloaded from the Google Play Store. As I explained in a post above, v9.16.2.38798 (that I’m currently using) plays DoVi v7 correctly on my Sony A80CK OLED TV, even with files w/HDR10+ metadata present. Everything looks great, Dolby Vision is properly detected and displayed with no color errors, black screen, or any other anomaly. So yes, I’m confident that the TV actually supports DoVi v7.

Have you used test files though to determine whether it’s truly playing DoVi or just the HDR10 base layer?

Iam still having this isssue on version 9.30.0.3604 with one of my movies

Hi,

I just changed my TV for a TCL 65C845 which support HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. I have two issues with it

On my Fire Cube 3rd, Dolby Vision work weirdly. Some movies work with Dolby Vision. Some doesn’t. On my Google TV, Dolby Vision work on this movies. So it’s not the movies.

Now i have some movies with HDR10+ and they never display with HDR10+. Only Kodi work with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

Every movie with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision seem working fine and always display Dolby Vision.

You just don’t believe me do you? I’ve already explained my findings and sent my logs to sixones. If you would like to point me to said “test files”, I’d be happy to “test” them for you and post my findings. Thanks for your reply.

Is this supposed to be fixed in public versions now? Still seems to be happening for me on 4K Max, plex 9.30.0.3604. I’m running it with a Panasonic TV which can do both DV and HDR10+, and was wondering if that was causing the issue for me if it is supposed to be fixed generally.
