I was happy with Firestick watching 4K ATMOS titles from my Plex server until Amazon updated firmware on the Firestick. Restarted everything, reset to factory on Firestick and getting replacement hardware from Amazon. Went back and found some Amazon Prime video with ATMOS and played fine, excepting dropouts. Realy ejoyed it while it worked.
There are two versions of Atmos.
Streaming Atmos or Lossy Atmos is Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos. This is the format used by Amazon, Netflix, etc.
Blu-ray Atmos or Lossless Atmos is TrueHD 7.1 + Atmos. This is the type found on Blu-ray discs.
Amazon Fire devices support passthrough of Streaming Atmos. If you’ve any such media on your Plex server, the Plex app on a Amazon FireStick 4K will direct play it and pass the Atmos audio to the attached receiver/soundbar/tv/etc.
Amazon Fire devices do not support passthrough of TrueHD audio. When using the Plex app on a FireTV device, TrueHD audio will be transcoded by the Plex Media Server to a supported format. Any Atmos data is lost during the transcoding process.
I seem to have resolved the issue by enabling HDMI passthrough in the PLEX app on the Firestick.
