I have a first generation FireTV. I have a plex server on a computer. I use HomeRun TV to get over the air. For over a year this combination has been working great. Recently the recordings are getting poor and the Plex app on the FireTV is struggling to connect and stay connected to the server. i think the poor recording is not the recording but the Plex app/firetv play back is the problem. I can connect to the server with my laptop and things seem good. So is the App going south on me or the firetv. I have been looking for an excuse to get a new one anyway. Maybe the cube.
The Plex app on Amazon just updated today to version 7.30.2.16712.
• Live TV: player overhaul providing a more reliable live TV playback experience.
• Live TV: add support for long press quick actions in the TV guide.
If the update does not show on the FireTV, you can push it from the Amazon web site. Go to the Plex app page and re-download. It should give you the option to pick your device. Since it is a new version, it should push the update to your FireTV in a few minutes.
You could also just delete the app and re-download, but you’ll lose any settings.
No joy. did not work. Everything is up to date. still having trouble connecting to the server from firetv.,
i am getting system does no allow secure connections now even with the laptop. i am going to uninstall everything everywhere and start from scratch
Ok i think the FireTv app is connecting through relay instead of directly to the server. I have been looking for how to get a direct connect to the server but not finding it. Can someone point me to the setting
What is displayed in the Now Playing section of the Plex Dashboard? It should tell you if your connection is local/remote/relay. See screenshot below (shows remote access).
Is the Plex Media Server local or remote to the FireTV device?
If remote, you’ll need to enable Remote Access. If already enabled, see troubleshooting guide linked below.
If local and connecting via relay, then there’s some issues with your network. Check the setting on your wifi router. Make sure the WiFi devices are not isolated from the wired network. Look for a setting called “AP Isolation” or similar, which isolates WiFi devices from the LAN. It should be disabled.

Well I was never able to get things working properly even though I uninstalled everything and then reinstalled. So I went to my linux box and installed it there and it works flawlessly. I think I would have to wipe my windows 10 disk and start completely over to get it working. Not worth the effort.
