This issue is only with Firestick 4K, Plex works fine playing problem files on ipad and computer.
Issue started with me yesterday, running Plex on Firestick 4K. Certain files will not play, get the connection lost error. I can immediately go to another file and it will play correctly. I have not experienced this failure with H.264 files.
I have played around with the previous recommendations of disabling “new player”, allowing fallback to insecure connections, etc, but no success. I have made sure to update and restart every app, player, and router that I have (multiple times.)
One thing I have noticed is that when I start a working movie on the Firestick while having my server setting page open I immediately see an activity notification:

But when I try to start a problem file, that notification never appears. This leads me to question if the error lies with the Amazon app side.
On a side note, I haven’t played around with sideloading apps on the firestick in a couple of years, would that be a possible workaround option until there is an update?
