Please help with remote playback buffering start/stop!

Hi Guys,

Long time Plex user and rarely have problems I can’t find answers to in the forums but recently some of my remote users are experiencing issues with video playback start/stopping.

I’ll try and cover the setup to give some context.

My server should be sufficient to host 5/6 simultaneous HD streams at once (i7 4790k with 32Gig DDR3 ram) 250mb download and 12mb upload Broadband. Having said that I always get my remote users to limit their connections to 2mb to ensure stability.

Not sure if the issue is related to the Amazon firestick but that’s where I am hearing the noise/problems from users, I also experienced this myself whilst streaming from my own firestick in a hotel. I performed a speed test from mobile and Hotel was achieving 15mb connection but I encountered constant starting/stopping (when iphone seemed to stream ok). Unfortunately I don’t have the log files from when I was at the hotel but I got user feedback tonight and grabbed the logs. The user in question also has a good BB connection and gets 50mb solid download speeds, movie in question was ‘Stand By Me’.

The only thing I noticed from the attached log is that a library scan was taking place in the background (not sure if this would/should impact remote playback!)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Kind Regards
Tylor

I’m not seeing any issues in your log. The transcoder speeds are very high. The Fire TV never signaled PMS of any problems. There were 2 small glitches, but they appear to have had no impact. The only thing I noticed if that the stream appears to be around 4Mbps. I can’t confirm this since the start of the transcoding process where this info would be shown isn’t included in the log, but the transcoder is reporting an average bitrate for the pieces it has sent as being around 4 Mbps. There could be an issue on the AFTV, but I would need to see the local log info from the device to check.

Thanks for taking the time to check the log, I’ll continue to monitor and possibly update a new log when the buffering reoccurs.

Same problem again, new log attached starting from 21:56 (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), log complains of direct play issues but the firestick user has direct play enabled. He was achieving 24.93mb download and 5.53 up with a 18ms ping on his connection at the time.

Not sure if more people are experiencing issues with the firestick but another one of my users has reverted back to using an old Roku :frowning:

Again, any help will be much appreciated.
Regards Tylor

Also… just wondering

Is there a way in which I could make a crude calculation as to how much data is being streamed by one/multiple users when remote playing is taking place?
i.e. Movie = 4gig transcode = %reduction, movie length etc? (I know it would only be a rough estimation).
I am curious if any traffic management via my provider could be causing issues but hard for me to establish unless I am there every time to perform upload checks!

Having Direct Play enabled does not mean it will direct play, just that it can. The logs indicate that the file is encoded using H264 profile level 4.1. The Fire Stick has a default profile level of 4.0, which will trigger the transcode. Ask your friend to change this option in the app settings to 4.1 or higher to avoid the transcode. The transcoding does not appear to be stressing your server, so any issues are likely on the client or due to transmission issues.
