Firestick: "Cannot convert video " message when playing from Plex Movies and Shows

Server Version#: 1,26
Player Version#: Firestick 9.2.0.32520

When trying to play anything from Plex Movies and Shows on my Firestick I get the message “the server is not powerful enough to convert video”. The same shows and movies play successfully on my PC (using Plex HTPC) and my iPhone (using the iOS app).

I have 2 Plex Media Servers located in seperate properties, and I’m not sure which server is used in this instance!

Any help appreciated.

Looks like transcoding issue. What is the log saying?

@sloke123

I think you are correct. I’ve managed to access the Plex log from the Firestick. It contains the following:

05-19 07:50:34.266 i: [Player][Timeline] Handling player error
05-19 07:50:34.267 i: [Player][Timeline] Playback stopped (error: true)
05-19 07:50:34.267 i: [Player][Timeline] Player error not known by server, reporting original player error (or a playback interrupted one)
05-19 07:50:34.268 i: [Player] Error reported: VideoTranscodeRequired (null)
05-19 07:50:34.268 i: [Player][Timeline] Playback stopped (error: false)
05-19 07:50:34.396 i: [TranscodeSession] Stopping…
05-19 07:50:34.396 i: [TranscodeSession] Session already stopped.
05-19 07:50:34.409 i: [Player][Error] Displaying player error…

I’m not sure what to try now. Thanks for your help.

Can you provide the media info of the said file? Or share me the file so i can test on my firestick?

I’ve now played around with the Plex Fire TV app settings. By setting “Play Smaller Videos at Original Quality” to ON, I have managed to start playing a couple of movies from Plex Movies & Shows. I’m not sure if this will raise any further issues but will continue experimenting.

Media info/sample video would be very helpful. So, I can test on my firestick.

The videos I’ve been having problems with are all from Plex “Movies & Shows” rather than my own media so I don’t have the file to share. I just tested the movie Scrooge again. This failed when the “Play Smaller Videos at Original Quality” setting was OFF, but started to play when the setting was ON. My own media seems to play ok if the setting is ON or OFF.

Ok, I tested it on both versions 9.2.0.32520 and 9.3.0.32573 beta with “Play Smaller Videos at Original Quality” setting ON and OFF. The video played smoothly. You could try reinstalling the app or the Firestick. That’s all I can think of now. :anguished:

Many thanks. I’ll try the re-install. What version of Firestick did you test on? Mine is a Fire TV Stick (not 4K or 4K Max)

I’ve just reinstalled and all working now! Many thanks for your help.

I have Firestick 4K. I’m glad I could help.
