FireTV 9.29.1.3463 direct play video began stuttering, while audio smooth

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7371
Player Version#: 9.29.1.3463

in the last several days direct playback for a lot of content, both old and new, has had video stuttering while the audio plays fine. videos that used to play fine no longer do. The video plays like a slideshow, basically a frame every couple seconds while the audio marches forward. If I switch it to transcode the video, playback is perfect with no stuttering.

I run Jellyfin in parallel and none of the content shows any stuttering issues, playback is fine.

Testing so far:

  • Plex FireTV direct stream: video stutters, smooth audio
  • Plex FireTV transcode: plays fine
  • Plex WebPlayer direct stream: plays fine
  • Jellyfin direct stream: plays fine
  • Jellyfin transcode: plays fine

Again, this has only appeared in the last 3-7 days, and mkvs that direct played on plex previously started stuttering, while Jellyfin shows no stuttering on any of the files plex now struggles with. Wouldn’t be a network bandwidth issue since Jellyfin plays fine, and also even very low-bandwidth files like animated shows stutter.

Would you be able to reproduce the issue and upload your client logs? Which FireTV device are you using and do you have any settings like Refresh rate or Resolution switching enabled?

Device: 1st gen Amazon Fire TV (the box, not a stick. uses ethernet) No refresh rate/resolution switching enabled.

Log attached: from enabling of logging to playback and glitching of a file.

We have been able to reproduce the issue. It seems to only happen on the 1st gen FireTV. It has been filed as an issue to be looked at. Thank you for reporting.

awesome, thanks for verifying it!

Thanks for reporting the issue, I think the problem was down to Dolby audio support on the FireTV.

Would you be able to see if this build solves the problem for you: https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/9.31.0.3650-def2f90/PlexForAndroid-9.31.0.3650-def2f90-armeabi-v7aAmazonRelease.apk

Hmm doesn’t look like the Gen 1 firetv likes that build? from adblink:

pkg: /data/local/tmp/PlexForAndroid-9.31.0.3650-def2f90-armeabi-v7aAmazonRelease.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]

@fxer I tested that build and it worked, but I first had to manually uninstall the version on the Fire TV via the device settings. Once done, I was able to sideload the build that @sixones provided (you will then need to sign it in and reconfigure your sidebar sources)

thanks @chrisallen that method worked!

and can confirm that build solved the issue for all content that had the problem, thanks @sixones!

Thanks for looking at this! I’ve also been seeing horrendous stuttering when playing original quality, which disappears when shifting quality down a peg that I assume starts transcoding.

Do you know when can we expect a fix in the main release channel for fire tv?

Hi Guys, hi Sixones,

yes this problem happens on the firetv 1. Gen.
I even got a spare one to test it out, so 2 Firetv 1. Gen are not able to play any Video anymore.
It stutters and the audio will even play after closing the video.
First i thought its an Hardware issue but it seems to be a Plex-Version issue.
The link you provided is not possible 2 download anymore.
Can you reupload the file?
THX!

Thank you, this did the trick! 9.31 was only available as sideload not from the Amazonstore right now. All Files are now running great again.
