FireTV transcode for nothing

Hi,

FireTV Lite transcoding for nothing on all media of my server.

It’s been a few weeks since Android devices in my household or friends, like the Fire TV Lite… transcode. While it is capable of playing HEVC or 1080p content. Yet another recent Plex update that blew it all up again. No need to ask if my settings are correct, yes they are, I force them to be in original quality and Plex transcodes all the same!!!

Is that actually transcoding the video or just the audio? I don’t know what app that is, but have you checked the dashboard using Plex Web. That could be a direct stream of the video which is expected when the audio is trnascoded.

Well, if the video is actually copying rather than transcoding, wouldn’t it be better if the above screen screen said something like “Copying” for the video rather than saying “Transcoding”? Certainly would be more accurate/informative and less confusing for users.

Seems like there’s a bug here regardless of what the answer to your question is.

Plex Media Server version? 1.25.x, 1.26.x, etc (not 4.x)
Plex Android TV client version?

Set your server for debug level logs. Settings → Server_Name → General.

Re-create the problem. Let the media play for 20 - 30 seconds.

Stop playback. Wait two minutes for the server to settle & log everything.

Pull server logs, attach entire zip file to thread.

I will post you soon some logs of the problem but it seems that it is well transcoded since my processor is panicking…

The Plex dashboard does. I don’t know what program that is. Here is an example. Direct Stream, means it is being copied and not transcoded.

One thing to check. Do you have the option enabled to Automatically Adjust Quality? That will force a transcode.

The question is not if the media is transcoding, but why the media is transcoding.

As you are not using hardware accelerated transcoding, it is normal for the CPU utilization to spike to near 100% when transcoding.

Suggest you re-create the problem, then pull server logs and android logs. Also include the XML info for the video you used for the test (save the file as .txt, the forum does not support .xml attachments).
