FireTV Transcoding FLAC to AAC when transcoding for .ass subtitles

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#: 8.16.1.24597

FireTV will direct-play even image subs like PGS. For whatever reason, Plex automatically transcodes .ass subs. I would be fine with this, except whenever I transcode anything, Plex automatically downgrades the audio from FLAC to AAC, even when I have the transcoder set to “Make my CPU hurt.” I don’t see why .ass subs should require a transcode at all when they direct play just fine in the PC Plex player, keeping their original styling, and FireTV goes so far as to even support direct play of .PGS subs. But even regardless of that, why does any form of transcoding always downgrade audio to AAC for me, even though the transcoding has nothing to do with audio? It seems to direct-play the FLAC just fine when subs are turned off. The same FLAC->AAC conversion happens when I try to play a file with too high of an h.264 rating.

Plex will transcode audio only because they need to keep video and audio synced

I can understand that, but is there a way to make it keep the audio as FLAC? Even on “make my cpu hurt” transcoding it always seems to turn any type of audio (FLAC stereo, FLAC 5.1, TRUEHD 5.1, etc.) into AAC. How can I make it so that Plex keeps the audio as FLAC when transcoding?

I don’t know the answer for that. It must be a technical explanation. A Ninja should know the answer.
