Has there been any progress on an actual fix for this within Plex itself?
A year or two ago I was having the well-known issue with the Plex for Windows desktop player where 5.1 audio was not getting down-mixed properly, and the entire center channel (i.e. dialogue) was basically inaudible and everything else was very quiet. Fixed it by changing a Windows setting, as far as I could remember.
Then yesterday I had to do a wipe and reinstall on my audio drivers, which of course reset things to default, and the problem returned…I just wasted 45 minutes hunting around for the solution again (after none of the even vaguely relevant settings in Plex fixed the issue), which was apparently to turn on “Windows Sonic for Headphone” in the PC’s spatial audio settings, even though i’m using incredibly bog-standard cheap stereo speakers.
So…partially my fault for not documenting what I did back then, but I am begging any devs that see this to do what they can to work on some kind of straightforward solution - just an option in the player itself that forces Plex to do a proper downmix from whatever’s in the file to 2.0 stereo without having to mess around with OS-level settings (especially since everything else plays audio perfectly regardless of the format) would be amazing.
