Mixing 5.1 surround down to stereo results in voices too quiet relative to music and sound effects

Player Version#: Plex HTPC for Windows 1.38.2.3738-02a27646

I have some video files that have 5.1 surround audio channels. I’m playing them back on a Windows 10 system using Plex HTPC, playing to my TV’s stereo speakers over HDMI.

The problem is that the voices in these files are way too quiet compared to the music and sound effects. I keep having to turn the volume up to hear them, and then quickly turn the volume down as soon as music starts or sfx starts playing, especially during action scenes. Very often it’s hard to hear the voices over the music!

It seems like something is off about the way Plex is mixing down to stereo. Is there any way for me to fix this?

What are you audio settings in the app?

My audio settings are:

  • Exclusive audio is unchecked
  • Audio Device is set to autoselect (and plays on the correct device)
  • All of the “Fixed Audio Offset” settings are set to 0ms
  • “Normalize Multi-channel audio” is on.

I tried turning off “Normalize Multi-channel audio” but it didn’t make any difference, at least not for this issue.

Those seem to be all the audio related settings Plex HTPC has, unless there’s something in a configuration file I can edit somewhere.
