FLAC Playback Fails on Vizio

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: 3.13.13
Vizio Model#: m70-E3
Vizio SmartCast Version#: 9.0.7.3

Bumping this issue again, I’m pretty much cutting/pasting from prior posters on this issue:

Hello, the bug is present in Vizio, I confirm. In a M70-E3 model, bug is simple. Launch the playback of a FLAC from Plex. The seconds are not advancing. No playback. Not even the “play” icon stating that the FLAC is currently read. Plex is just a half-blank screen.

The TV software is up to date.

The Vizio app has FLAC listed under additional Direct Play Music Support, however, playback fails to start when using the Vizio Plex app. I’m experiencing the same issue on local and remote servers. From the logs, it appears the client is disconnecting.

When playback is initiated from the iOS app and cast to the TV, it works without issue.

Is this a client bug? A configuration issue on my part? I tried turning off Direct Stream and it had no effect.

I’m having this issue on my Vizio PQX-65.

Server Version 1.18.8.2527

This issue has plagued me for almost a year now. I am able to play FLAC files through a VPN back to my Plex server even when I am on the road with my phone, but I can’t play them in my local living room for my family to enjoy.

You could try the new preview version. Details on how to access it are here: Try out our new Vizio SmartCast preview

This version will eventually replace the current app. Testing for this version found that FLAC playback was fairly unstable for Vizio TVs (i.e. attempting to direct play it caused bad things to happen ). Currently this preview version will always transcode FLAC, but we have an issue filed to see if we can improve this by figuring out if there are some scenarios where direct play is safe.

Just tried this out. FLACs play beautifully now. I like the new interface! Next up to try my movie collection…

Thank you, @ruukit Flac is working now, even if it is being transcoded. I did not get to play with it much, but my wife and kids were at least able to listen to the various movie soundtracks during the day.

@ruuk … my FLAC files are getting horribly over compressed and it really sounds awful. Are the files just getting transcoded to 128k mp3? Is there a user option to bump that up in the settings someplace?

As far as I know there isn’t an option to change the audio transcode quality, but in my testing FLAC is converted into ~520k AAC (and AAC is generally considered higher quality at the same bitrates as MP3).

Maybe it’s worth getting a sample file (or the whole file if it’s not too large) from you so I can try to see what’s going on.
