Forced account sign in and server could not be found

Server Version#: 1.13.4.5271-200287a06-x86_64
Player Version#: 6.16.1.4533

Hi all, I’m hoping someone can help with my Synology server/Android TV problems.
I upgraded to the latest version of Plex for Synology mid-March 2019 (Which would have been Plex Media Server 1.15.1.791). Up until and including this point I hadn’t created a Plex account or logged into the server/player with a Plex account.

I noticed that once I had upgraded the server, Plex on my Android TV won’t see the server running on my Synology NAS.
I tried all sorts of network and permission changes, but no luck.
The Plex account log in screen was missing the skip link and was forcing me to log in to somehow see the server, so I created a Plex account and logged in and it worked straight away.
Sigh.
I don’t need to access my Plex server remotely and I’m only connecting to the server locally via the Plex app from my android TV. No other devices.

So, I uninstalled Plex Media Server 1.15.1.791 and rolled back to Plex Media Server 1.13.4.5271 and rolled the Android TV app back to 6.16.1.4533, logged out of my Plex account across everything and cleared my cookies and low and behold it found the server from the TV again without logging in and I could access the server settings again without having to log in.
I added access from the local network so that the TV could access the server without authentication as an extra measure of not needing a Plex account.
Basically it worked again without friction as it had in the past.

I turned off auto updates for the server and TV and thought that would be the end of it.
Until last week when the Plex app on the TV couldn’t see the server all of a sudden. When I tried to view the Plex Media Server settings via the web interface it was forcing me to log in again. The only problem is now its saying server not found. So I can’t view or change any of the server settings.

This would all be understandable if it just didn’t work and the server couldn’t be connected to, as Plex reports it, but that’s not the case.
The standard Video app on my Android TV can connect to the Plex media server, browse the contents and play media without any restrictions. The same was the case when the Plex app claimed it couldn’t connect to Media Server 1.15.1.791 and again now it can’t connect to Media Server 1.13.4.5271.

Why can a non native media app on my TV seamlessly work with the Plex server when the native Plex app fails without reason?

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Firstly, can I ask if the need to have the server and the app signed into plex.tv so that they can be authenticated effects the basic local operation of Plex, or not?
and if so, is this a recent change?

I’ve been using Plex on my local NAS for more than three years, without having to claim the server or log in to a Plex account on the server or app. This is the first time I have encountered mandatory log in to get it to operate.

I’ve been working through all your suggestions over the past few days, but I haven’t had any success yet.
I’ll keep trying and work through the steps in Q16, which is leading me to;

https://support.plex.tv/articles/204604227-why-can-t-the-plex-app-find-or-connect-to-my-plex-media-server/

I’ll report back when I’ve been through these processes.

ok, I’ve been through all the methods you listed in your first post, and through those support articles with no success.
I’ve updated my Plex Media Server to PlexMediaServer-1.15.4.994-107756f7e-x86_64 and updated my Android TV app to 7.15.0.10215.
I’ve edited all the permissions on the Synology and tried removing authorised devices and reclaiming the server.

I can load the local web interface via http://[my.local.NAS.IP]:32400/web/index.html and it redirects me to https://app.plex.tv/auth/ with a message that “Plex Web
would like to sign in to your Plex account”.
After I click sign in, it redirects me from https://app.plex.tv/auth/ back to http://[my.local.NAS.IP]:32400/web/index.html, pops up a Plex Pass subscription message and continues to spin it wheels in the left hand menu saying “Looking for servers…”
I’ve signed in to my Plex app on my Android TV and I get the same message; “No servers found - server version 1.3.0.0 or higher required”.

However, when I open the standard Sony Android TV Video app, and select ‘devices’ the Plex Media Server from my NAS is listed immediately and I can browse the contents and play media without any issues.

I’m really scratching my head as to why the local Plex server web interface and the official Plex Android app can’t see the Synology Plex media server at all, but the standard android video app can.

Cheers Trumpy81, running through the instructions on Q16 on the Synology FAQ’s page - in particular, executing the claimpms.sh script on the Synology NAS via SSL worked this time!
(possibly as I had tried upgrading/downgrading/upgrading the media server application & it needed the preferences.xml file deleting to get the claimpms.sh script to work successfully).

It wasn’t so much that the URL was incorrect as it adds the /index.html automatically when you load http://my.local.NAS.IP:32400/web, but removing the preferences.xml and running claimpms.sh allowed the local connection to see the server.

I can now see the server settings via the local web interface and the Android TV Plex app can connect to the server. Thank you!

Can you please elaborate on this statement so I can understand the reasoning behind it?
Does not signing in effect the basic local operation of Plex or not?

OK, I see. Is that something that has recently been implemented?
I’ve been using Plex on my NAS for years and haven’t needed to sign in to authenticate the server or app up until March 2019.

Is there a way that I can view the settings on my server via the local http://my.local.NAS.IP:32400/web URL without first being redirected to https://app.plex.tv and being prompted that Plex Web would like to sign in to your Plex account?

I’m sure in the past there was a skip option that doesn’t seem to be there now.

If I’m not connected to the internet then the local network can’t find https://app.plex.tv/ and I get an error message that Plex is not reachable and to make sure the server has an internet connection.

So it’s clear that there is now no way for me to view the settings on my local server without first signing into a plex.tv account, or to connect to the server to play media.
The standard Video app on my Android TV can no longer see or connect to the latest version of Plex Media Server (1.15.4.994-107756f7e-x86_64) either.
It’s a shame because, before the forced account sign in, connection via the Plex app on my Andriod TV to the local media server was easy and reliable.
Thanks for your assistance trumpy81 resolving the connection to my server and confirming, in no uncertain terms, that Plex previously worked without signing in, but now doesn’t.

I was happy when it just worked before having to create an account. I’m not interested in any of the extra features that are available from creating an account and fundamentally if it doesn’t just work, it doesn’t fulfil the basic operating I need it to, which is to just connect to the media server and play something from my local network without any other steps.

It’s been good while it operated smoothly and I understand the business model of trying to drive people to sign up to a paid subscription but I feel I’m being rubbed-up the wrong way being forced to sign in to an online account just to connect to my local server.
I’ve uninstalled Plex Media Server on my NAS, removed the Plex app from my TV and gone back to using Kodi – which does what I need it to.
