Is there a way to order how they show up in the list when you click the subtitles button?
Unfortunately not.
However, when you enable the automatic subtitle selection, external subtitles are selected preferably over embedded ones.
Hi @OttoKerner,
I also have read through a lot of threads about plex subtitle management and I have the feeling that I’m going around in circles with my issue…
I’m a french native speaker so all my movies have:
- Original audio track (usually english but can be chinese, swedish, …) - default flag
- French audio
- French subtitles - default flag
- French forced subtitles - forced flag
- English subtitles
For me, I want my movies to play 99% of the time original audio + french subtitles.
For my family, it would probably be french audio + french forced subtitles.
I from time to time I want to improve my english, so I would manually pick original audio + english subtitles.
My settings are:
- prefered audio english
- prefered subtitles french
- subtitles automaticaly selected
As far as I understand, Plex should pick my non forced subtitle first. But in all cases, it always pick the forced one. I tried all different possibilities, even tried to change the track order when remuxing my MKVs but nothing work.
The only workaround that works - and that’s not a correct solution - is to defined my non forced subtitles as forced…
Am I missing something?

Unfortunately, Plex doesn’t support this use case.
Thanks for confirming that.
I may be wrong, but outside of the pure english user use case, I believe that the case I just described might be quite broad, don’t you think? (people watching movies with the original sound track will usualy pick subtitle in their own language)
