Forget Audio and Subtitle Selection after XXX days or Watched

Once you have manually selected a subtitle track or audio track, Plex remembers that setting, and applies it forever to that particular media, regardless of the device being used, the “watched” status, or the length of time the item has been in the library.

I would suggest that manual selections for audio and subtitles be forgotten (can’t think of a better word) after the item has been considered “Watched” (automatic by Plex, or manually marked by the user) and after a defined period of time. I would think the setting for “Weeks to consider for On Deck and Continue Watching” would be the deciding factor.

I find that retention of a “one time” selection annoying. For example, I might have chosen the Directors Comments audio track at some point in time, watched the entire movie with that selection two years ago, and when I decided today to re-watch the movie today, Plex defaults to that previously selected audio track.

I understand that retaining that selection for a reasonable amount of time could be a useful feature. I can start watching on one device, and continue on another without making a selection, so I’m not suggesting it be removed.

Additionally, if you happen to have apps that will automatically choose the best audio track, surround or stereo as an example on the Roku or PMP, the default selection is not touched. You can move from device to device, and the app selects the best format. However, if you happen to use a device incapable of that automatic audio selection (example - Android TV or PS4) Plex retains that selection, and now, no matter which device you use, you are required to make the selection.

I realize my description of the problem with that long term detention is probably confusing, but I’m hoping someone at Plex understands, and considers it a reasonable request.

I like the idea of this. I too would like plex to “reset” the audio/subtitle selection.

As long as it never happens with forced subtitles. :grinning:

Not sure why my request would affect forced subtitles. As far as I know, all apps automatically select them based on your language settings for audio and subtitles. If you’re manually selecting a forced subtitle, it is probably an unnecessary step.

Or not correctly configured in plex settings. Though I am looking at Hitsville statement the opposite of what we want/looking for. I may be wrong.
If I’m correct, it doesn’t matter what audio/sub track(mainly audio) you select. After a while it will go back to it’s default track.

An example of this would be a dual-track anime where English is the default(forced) and Japanese is the secondary. I can’t speak for myself but I have a few friends that enjoy watching/re-watching them in their native language(jpn)… but only sometimes. But because the setting of changing them stays forever they always have to re-select the English track again even though eng is the preferred forced track.

EDIT: apparently the first three letters of Japanese is censored. To my surprise the abbreviation is jpn and not those three letters.

I KNEW my explanation could be confusing. Maybe yours does it better.

Here’s a theoretical example in case we need more confusion

On Christmas Eve, I decided to watch Die Hard again as I hadn’t seen it for a couple of years . Apparently I had chosen the commentary track at some point in time (not sure why I seldom do that, and not even sure why I included it in the rip) Anyway, I had to select the Dolby Digital soundtrack manually, even though I was using the Roku, which under normal circumstanced would automatically select the surround audio on the device connected to the A/V receiver.

Because this time, I manually selected the Surround track, all devices now default to that track. On one Roku connected TV I get no sound at all, and on another Roku on a different TV it forces my server to transcode to stereo. No big deal for the server, I know. To remedy the situation on those TV’s, I need to select the Stereo track, and then when I return to the surround enabled system, I need to re-select the surround audio.

It may seem trivial to some, but extremely annoying to me. My example above is obviously extreme, but in any case, once I’ve completely watched “Die Hard” I can’t see a good reason to retain the audio and subtitle settings.

No wonder I can’t get my anime to play the proper audio track. I’ve been censored.

Too bad it doen’t revert back to the forced lang or your preferred lang. Too bad, we could of faked plex out by selecting another lang for the secondary track… I know, not idea.

Plex will select the lang from your preferred lang by default and ignore the MKV forced flag.
