So I need to do a refresh of my Plex OS (the 12TB of storage is in an external enclosure) so I decided to switch from Windows 10 to Ubuntu. But before I do anything I want to make sure I don’t have to go to the trouble of reinviting everyone to my server. If I log in with my current Plex credentials will I still have to share the server with everyone?
If you follow the guide on how to move an install to another system, you should be fine. Though… as you want to switch from Windows to another OS, things get a bit more complicated as you cannot simply translate the server configuration in your Windows Registry to the preferences.xml file used by Linux.
I suppose you need to balance if you want to spend the effort to manually build your own preferences.xml based on the parameters inside your registry or if you’re ok with some manual touches to fully restore all functionality of your server.
Your friends will still be listed as your friends – if Plex perceives your new setup as an actual new server you might need to reestablish the shares.
