I just did a server migration from my Synology NAS to a PC, that could actually handle HD video remotely. I think that almost everything went well with the switch, but when I went to the users & sharing, it did not show anything being shared with my friends. I had to go back in and reshare. Is that normal, or did I do something wrong?
So, with this happening, did it not save my friends usage? What they watched etc? Is there something I can do?
Thanks.
Depends on how you moved Plex. If you just installed it on the PC, added the videos, then it is working as expected.
If you had wanted to keep watch history, shares and other settings there is a different process for moving a server to maintain that data.
No, I did the process of compressing the files and moving it from the one machine to the other. Everything I had on the other one moved over except the users & sharing part.
You have to move the advanced settings as well so it is recognized as the same server that was shared with them this is usually easy when moving to the same OS but a NAS uses a preferences.xml file for this and windows uses the registry.
this could be done manually copying the MachineIdentifier and processedmachineidentifier values from the xml to the same registry entry values which identify that particular server.
This is going from a Synology NAS to a PC.
This seems a little tricky. Where would I find that in the NAS, and where would I copy that to the PC?
Thanks .
in the plex media server folder on the nas that has the database and such is the preferences.xml file. on a windows computer it is the registry as described in link in previous reply.
So, what do I do with the preferences.xml file?
what I said earlier
but
if you already reshared then you should not have to do anything.
But, with me resharing, will that take away all of my friends data, such as which shows they have watched?
Thanks for all of your help.
Watch status history stays on server regardless if you remove a friends share. If you look at play history on your dashboard it should all still be there if you copied over database
You could just talk to your friend and ask them if they see things they already watched are marked as played to confirm.
You are the best. Thanks for all the help. I found their history in the dashboard. I am not as much of a BigWheel as you are with Plex. I’m learning, but only because of people like you.
Thanks BigWheel, but you do know what dogs do to wheels.
