FreeNas + Plex jail - permission issue

Hello everyone,

i have my PMS installed in a jail on my FreeNas 11.2. The owner of my share, where all the media is stored is user “felix” from group “felix”. The share permissions are setup as 770. For plex if have a user “plex” of group “plex”. The user “plex” also has the auxilary group “felix” so he can access the files on the share.

If i put files on the share now the are owned by felix:felix as intended. However i can’t see these files in my Plex unless i change the ownership to plex:felix . Is something wrong with how i setup the permissions, or this this a plex issue?

I suspect you have an issue with your permissions.

As far far as FreeBSD is concerned, the media owner group “felix” and the “felix” group in the plex jail may not be the same group. They may be named the same, but unless they both have the same group ID then they are different groups.

Try running the command “id felix” and “id plex” to see what groups each user belongs to and the associated group IDs.

How did you add “plex” user to “felix” group?

@nika1667 is mostly likely correct and something was not done in the proper place, that said the possible easier method for something like this is setting adding 972 to the group that owns the files.

Double check it but inside the jail plex should match user id 972

It’s essential that outside the jail, i.e. within FreeNAS, Plex has a UID and GID of 972. So rework this. For more information, refer to the spoiler Relevant Information for Most plugins in this post.

Don’t do this. Assuming you’re using an SMB share, you then need to give Plex read access to your personal media using a Windows ACL e.g.

Thank you for your input guys. I got back to my parents house today and had time to look into this. I checked if each user belongs to the necessary groups, which was the case.

The problem was tho that i had not created a group “felix” inside my jail. So i did that and added the “plex” user inside the jail to the group aswell. Now everything is working as intended.

So once again. Thank you very much!
