Looking into to purchasing the life time Plex membership and see the live TV option. I can see certain channels for free at the moment and wonder if there are any UK based channels to stream once purchased?
I am also looking into adding a digital tuner. I then wondered if it would be at all possible to use Freesat within Plex instead of digital TV? If Freesat is an option throwing it out there - Using my Sky box to integrate in?
Long shot on most there as I cannot find reference to this anywhere on the web.
Freesat is just an EPG (Electronic Program Guide) and nothing more, I think you are talking about DVB-S which is the signal broadcasted from the satellite and picked up by your dish, then passed to a receiver. So all Freesat does is make the channel listings more informative so you know what is broadcasting on each channel.
Some users have said they have had limited success with the EyeTV Netstream 4Sat reciever, but Plex does not support DVB-S (satellite), it does however support DVB-C (cable) and DVB-T (aerial antenna). Plex state they are hoping to support DVB-S but I wouldn’t really count on it coming anytime soon, because there are so few hardware vendors for DVB-S that any implementation would have been quickly brought into compatibility.
There was a post requesting SAT>IP support, which is theory would mean a whole host of new devices worldwide would become compatible in one quick sweep… but we still haven’t seen it meaning that it hasn’t been considered for compatibility by Plex. Odd because it is a magic bullet. This request had loads, I mean loads(!) of comments saying +1 and yet the idea only managed 15 votes. Hence Plex rightly assumed that SAT>IP is not in demand, a lot of people will complain that SAT>IP still hasn’t been implemented however those same people should learn that +1 is not a vote for a new feature. They need to actually like the feature request post.
Although not official Plex does have limited support for SAT>IP I have a TB100 Sat>IP dish and I can connect it to Plex. You get an “unsupported tuner” warning (in some cases you might need to manually add the IP address) however it does appear. You need to select the following in the drop downs after adding the tuner.
28.2E
None,
Ku-Linear (Universal)
Then start a scan, this can take some time to complete as there are a lot more channels on FreeSat compared to FreeView.
Once the scan has completed you need to select the connection type and your guide. Unlike FreeView the mapping is far from 1:1 and you’ll need to do some testing yourself however it will work.
I have two tuners attached to my Plex install:
FreeView tuner - HDHomeRun (Dual Tuner)
FreeSat tuner - Selfsat Sat>IP + IP 21 (8 Streams)
The biggest downside is you can’t get a FreeSat guide listing only a FreeView one. Most channels overlap but when they don’t it is a pain. Would be nice if they fixed that but it did work at one stage but when I reinstalled the option was gone.
