Hello, I have a friend that I gave access to my library and he seems to always be streaming via DirectPlay.
I went into settings, Web, Quality and I do in fact have it set to 3 Mbps.
Any way to force this setting? I don’t want him hogging all of the bandwidth with a direct play.
You are setting the quality for you to stream via the web client. When in the web client all of the settings under Settings -> Web are strictly for that instance of the web client and will not affect other users.
The setting you are looking for is under Settings -> Server -> Remote Access -> Limit Remote Stream Bitrate.
I’m guessing that’s a Plex Pass Feature (I don’t have it either).
Get in touch with your friend and have him adjust his Remote Quality Setting - or deny access.
Create lower bit rate files, put them in ‘Special Libraries’ and only share those libraries.
2a) Good news, Bad news: Good News - lower bit rate files take less space. Bad News - you have to create them.
Go Plex Pass.
Note: Direct Play is the best possible scenario for your CPU. If you have compromised horsepower in the CPU department, transcoding everything for a remote user is going to show up as a problem pretty quickly.
Good news, Bad news: Bad News - your friend ‘may’ experience frequent and really annoying buffering. Good News - your friend will probably stop accessing your server as a result and your problem is solved.
