Friends accounts and their kids using same device

I’m still fairly new to the PMS life and so far loving it but I’m in a bit of a pickle right now. I’ve learned my lesson of setting up all my friends and family as managed accounts and now have started setting them up as Friends and getting them to open their own account. So first off I set up my Daughter & Son-n-laws account which of course has no restrictions. I would also like to set up an account for their kiddos that has restrictions and that they can also log into on the same device. What is the best way in doing this? Do I need to have a plex pass on my daughters account for her to create managed users that can also see my files and they can add restrictions from there?

Thanks in advance for Any help,

So yes and no… YOU can invite your grandkids to the account using their email and setting restrictions yourself, OR your daughter can get a plex pass and setup managed users, and you can invite her managed users and they will keep their restrictions (according to a mod I spoke with a few months back). Either way will work, but one will be her managing them, and one will be you managing them… if she wants to manage, she will have to pay.

Edit:

There are two ways for you to manage them on your side without her paying. You can restrict by library, or you can restrict by rating (or both)… However, in order for the ratings to work properly, you will need to go through each show and movie and make sure the ratings are set properly… sometimes the ones that come through are wonky imo

Thanks Jason, that’s what I was thinking, thank you very much for verifying that for me…

I’m a bit confused, you do understand that there are 2 types of home users (managed on your account and invited with their own account) ?

You can set restrictions on either.

So the kids and parents can each have separate plex accounts and you can add to home and restrict each of them individually.

You cannot share with someone else’s managed users. Only the server admin can manage the restrictions on their server.

The only way this could work without them paying for their own Plex Pass is to create full plex.tv accounts for all people in that household.
Then invite all of them into your own Plex Home.
You will have to continue to manage their access permissions.

But even if they pay for their own Plex Pass, you still have to manage their access. Because, see above.

I was just going by what a Mod told me in one of my own questions… Read here?

regular not managed

IMO He should

  1. Share with and invite his daughters/son-n-law regular Plex account(s) to his home.
  2. Create and share with managed users for the kids.
  3. add an account pin to his account at least.
  4. his daughter being in the home and having a regular account can sign into the devices the kids might use at their house.
  5. daughter should also add a pin to her account

so now everyone is in a home controlled by the server admin (as far as shares from that server). While Plex Home is technically designed for people who actually live with you due to the nature of the fast user switcher. this has the added benefit of when the daughter+ son-in-law+kids come to visit, their accounts will also be available at gramps house in the user picker. (I apologize if “gramps” is offensive)

There should be a supported way to easily migrate a managed user to a stand-alone plex user.

I am sure there are tons of plex home users that started out as managed, and grown up, and are now still stuck with the admin account because they don’t want to lose history/watched status on years worth of use.

This alone is probably preventing thousands of new plex accounts from being created.

Speaking for myself, there are at least 4 more new plex accounts that would be created from my home users > managed > stand-alone accounts.
