Friends are unable to play shared music files

Server Version#:1.23.6.4881
Player Version#:IOS 7.21
Friends are able to see the directory of shared music files, but when a file is selected it never starts playing. Friends are still able to play shared Movie and TV show files. Problem occurs for friends using both the IOS and Android App. Shared Music files will also not play on the Plex App on the Fire TV.
I can play music, movie and TV Show files fine on my app both at home and remotely.
This problem just started in the last two weeks. Friends have been playing Music files for years before the problem started

Server logs would be helpful but likely also would be helpful to see the ios logs or android logs from the Plex player on their device.

if you create a new managed user and switch to that account does it also not allow playback of music?

I would like to add that I am affected by this also.
In my instance it is iOS devices that cannot play music.
Users are able to browse to the item they want just fine but as soon as they click play nothing happens, no error, no progress beyond 0.00.
This happens if you press play on the track or play on the album
I have checked and one was reporting this on an iPad running the version of the app released today to fix the sync issues. The person reporting it with the iPhone had already tried signing out and back in, uninstalling the app and reinstalling it but the problem persists.
My android devices work absolutely fine although my NVidia Shield did require me to press play twice on some MP3s.
The two users are different user types: first, a local user account and the second, a separate Plex user who I share my libraries with. They both browsed to the content by folder and by artists and got the same thing.
Looking at my logs I don’t see anything that really flags a concern other than hundreds of errors that say parsing SSDP schema for [local IP of my Sky+ HD]:49153/description1.xml

that is only detecting SSPD devices that annoucne themselves on the network. the error is just that is not a device PMS can figure out what it is. PMS keeps an eye out for compatible DVR tuners on network.

The player logs should info on how it is trying request stream from server

Here are the IOS logs. There is a successful try to play music followed by an unsuccessful attempt. Most attempts are unsuccessful. I have no idea why the first one was successful.

Server logs will follow tomorrow.

Here are both the iPhone and the Plex Media Server logs.

I did four plays.

  1. Using a friend’s Plex account playing a shared music file. The iPhone is on a local WiFi network. The play fails. The status in the Plex dashboard is error.

2 Using a friend’s Plex Account playing a shared TV Show file. The iPhone is on a local WiFi network. The play is successful. The status on the Plex dashboard is playing, direct play.

  1. Using a friend’s Plex Account playing a shared music file. The iPhone is on the ATT LTE network. The play fails. The status in the Plex dashboard is error.

  2. Using a friend’s Plex account to play a shared TV show. The iPhone is on the ATT LTE network. The play is successful. The status in the Plex dashboard is playing, Transcode of video and audio.

I am having a similar issue, where the managed users connecting through iOS do not get music playback.

I have reproduced the problem on a FireTV.

I am trying to play items in libraries shared from another PLEX Account. The problem does not occur with TV shows or movies, but no music files will play. It doesn’t matter if the music file is a normal song or is very long. The message on the TV screen says: “An error occurred while playing this item.”

Plex Server is running on Windows 1.23.6.4881

Plex Software on Fire TV is 8.20.1.26670
Fire TV Home Version 6322095.1
Fire OS 6.2.8.1 (NS6281?3385)
Here are the logs:

I have more information on the problem on a iPhone.

It only occurs when playing long music files. I have music files that are recorded shows that are 2.5 hours long. These will not play for a friend using an iPhone and playing from a shared music folder. Music files the length of songs are currently playing OK on an iPhone.

I’m able to reproduce the problem. I have an idea what is going on and will bring it up with the team. Thanks for reporting.

I didn’t do anything. I am able to play typical music files. The problem occurs for me when playing very long files on the iPhone. Long means recorded radio shows that are 2 hours long. These won’t play when they are in a shared folder being played by a friend.

also having same issue and forum response to @bsneider181 thread listed below.

I’m experiencing exact same issue. Music won’t play via plex app on iphone or ipad. Movie/tv audio/video is fine. When viewing dashboard, it indicates there is an error - see attached. I’m on ios 13.7 on phone & ios 14.7.1 on ipad. This started several days ago.

If I run Plex from the iphone/ipad browser, music will play fine so issue is specific to the Plex app.

Plex dashboard indicates an error when viewing image

Same, I cannot play music from Plex app on IOS at all - doesn’t matter if it’s a two minute song or a two hour album - but movies and videos play fine. Music files don’t play through the app at all.

Have you found any resolution? I have the same problem.

I had a similar issue a few weeks back. I needed to enable downloads for shared users.

I am also having this problem - or rather a friend is, having an issue using Plex Android on a Moto G phone (unable to play any music files, although shared video is fine) even though all files can be seen. Ironically, another friend with whom I have just shared the same libraries is able to play everything fine on an iphone.

Pretty sure he means in the share settings you have set up for them, like which libraries they have access to, one of the options is to allow downloads. You should not need to set that, but that is likely the issue that movie.fan was referring to

the person who is the administrator of the server has to do it. to be clear as far as I know they should not have to and this is what the probable bug is.

it is a permission. like they gave you permission to have access to stream their music library and/or other libraries.

yes but i don’t know when that will be complete.

The pic was from the Plex server. I logged on via iPad and monitored from Plex server to see what was occurring.
