Future version of AppleTV+mpv using bwdif deinterlacer?

I just came across this blogpost: Plex's New Video Player for iOS and tvOS - free time

Plex will soon use one of the best quality deinterlacers, bwdif , on the Apple TV 4K. bwdif is a motion adaptive deinterlacer that is based on yadif with the use of w3fdif and cubic interpolation algorithms. w3fdif was developed and is used extensively by the BBC. It is computationally cheaper and, therefore, faster than yadif.

Yadif 2x is one of the best deinterlacers in my experience but pretty hardware hungry. If this get’s implemented that would mean we could watch live tv without any transcoding on Apple TV and iOS.

I couldn’t find any info about this except on this blog post, so i have no idea where the author got this info from. Any hints @sergiou87 ?

Hey!

In our tests Yadif 2x has been awfully bad in terms of performance in Apple TV 4K  We’ve tried bwdif too, and performance is much better but still see important performance issues with some videos.

However, I tried those very same videos with other Apple TV apps, with deinterlacing enabled, and performance is much better. Not sure if the problem lies in mpv or something we’re doing wrong in the app, because all use ffmpeg under the hood.

TLDR: yes, we’re working on that, but there are performance issues we need to look into
