Re virus scanning, I’ve done that a few times. Also, the PMS and all our devices here have AV on them.
As I’ve been working on this issue the number of films and TV shows in my libraries have been reducing, probably as I’ve deleted trash. Obviously the media is still there. The media is fine as I can view it in VLC without issue.
Deleting and resourcing files is a non starter as there is now hundreds of them and as I said, I don’t think they are corrupt. It looks like some error in the file system is causing them to be seen as a folder instead of a file. When I rebooted the .srt file was fine again. Minutes later it wasn’t.
I think I’ll try a re-install over the top of windows over the weekend. The hardware isn’t Windows 11 compatible so if that fails I’ll just build a new PMS from the ground up on new hardware and re-scan all my media. I’ll lose lots of stuff like what has been watched etc. but I’ll have to bear with that. I guess could backup and restore the Plex DB? That may preserve a lot.
Anyway, many thanks for helping. I don’t think it’s a Plex issue. Maybe I should move to Ubuntu…
If you want to test it out, I made a new file from the one you provided (which looks completely normal here on my Mac). This isn’t a copy, I cat’d the contents of it into a completely new file. I then tested the new file with my local copy of John Wick and it worked fine.
Hi all,
Many thanks to all who offered support on my issue. I’m pleased to update that my issue is resolved.
The resolution was to replace the hardware with a new installation of Windows 11. Purchased from Amazon £160.00 GBP.
GMKtec G3 Plus Intel processor N150(3.6GHz, beat N100), 16GB DDR4 RAM 512GB PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD, Mini Computer with 4K Dual HDMI Display/4x USB3.2/WiFi 6/BT5.2/RJ45 Ethernet.
I followed the process posted on this forum to transfer the Plex installation from old to new and it went flawlessly. My new server is up and running and hasn’t missed a beat. All logs on all apps are now clear with no ‘Invalid Handle’ error messages.
Transfers of Data from old to new were carried out via USB3.2 stick. Interestingly, transfers on the old box were painfully slow - highest about 42kbps. Transfers on the new box, tens of mbps. Highest 42mbps.
So, hardware?
I plan to blow away the old Windows 10 install on the old box and install a fresh Windows OS. I’ll report back what happens.
I still think I should have gone Linux but it was learning curve that put me off. If the refresh of the old box works out maybe I’ll install Linux there and use it to learn the OS there.
Anyway, it was great that I was offered lots of help. Many thanks to you all.
Chris
