I imagine this is going to be on a lot of people’s minds with the many Gear VRs being given away to S7 pre-orderers. The Netflix player is a surprisingly good experience, especially with being able to lie down and watch a movie/show. I’ve seen various methods of making it happen, but mostly via a whole lot of hassle that Plex is designed to make us not have to worry about.
So, if there was a version of Plex that plays in Gear VR, and with a content browser as well, that would be awesome!
Ho Yeah, just got my S7 Edge today with the Gear VR, really nice setup !! And yes, the Netflix app is really nice ! Hope Plex comes out with something !

Well I have had a GearVR since November, I also was frustrated by a lack of Plex client for GearVR.
Now while I am software developer I had not done Android or C++ before I have done a bit with Ouclus (dk1 kickstarter).
I have over the past couple of weeks in my spare time being trying to integrate Plex into the sample cinema app.
I have had some success, in short I can now authenticate via Plex Pass, obtain servers, show ‘all’ movies from a library and of course play them.
I am working on adding browsing by category which will be good enough for my own needs.
My problem is I am not a official Plex developer, so don’t know where I stand with this unofficial client, there is also a great deal of work to do anything other than basic browsing by category and playing.
So there are really two issues, both related.
In order to make it available to the general public it needs to go on the Oculus store. This means meeting certain quality guidelines and I would need to get agreement with the Plex team - this will depend on whether they are planning to roll their own.
I am a dad with 3 kids and full time job, I have limited time and so if I did want to develop it further, e.g. custom interfaces, full Plex features etc I would have to sell it independently on the Plex store rather than give it away and it will still depend on the demand for it, the sub set of users with plex + samsung galaxy + gear vr is not very large compared to most android apps.
Having said all the above. I am willing to share my alpha with a few people of these forums within the coming week or so, you will need to provide your device ids, so I can get Oculus to generate signatures I can include in the APK which will let it run on your phone.

It sounds like a good start. It might be worth checking out http://www.sideloadvr.com/. Its kind of an unofficial app store, at the very least it might be handy during the dev stages

That would be very cool, support for VR (whatever brand or goggle this may be) in Plex…
I imagine a virtual cinema where you would see seats around if you turn your head, and a big ass screen in front of your eyes, where you have the best seats possible of course. Then the trailers start (already supported in Plex), then the cinema hall darkens for the main feature… and the movie begins!

But I am only supporting GearVR atm.
