Genre-Specific Smart Playlist Contains Songs from Other Genres

I created a smart playlist of music in the genre Christmas (type “Christmas” in the search box, scroll down to Genres > Christmas - in Music and click on it). The playlist contains music tracks that do not have a genre of Christmas. It seems that the playlist is including all music by artists that have any Christmas songs. For instance, I have Christmas albums by Arcade Fire and Michael Bublé. The Christmas playlist includes every track by those artists, regardless of whether the track’s genre is Christmas.

My workaround is to Play All, create new “dumb” playlist with the songs, and then remove all the non-Christmas songs manually.

Side note: Is there any other way to filter by genre? It would be great to have filters on the Music > All > Tracks page. Also, Genre should be an optional column to display.

Unfortunately, tracks don’t have a genre in Plex.
Only artists and albums have a genre.

You can filter either by artist-genre or album-genre, if you use the ‘Custom Filter’.

Is track genre something that might be added in the future?

The odd thing here is that the non-Christmas songs included in the smart playlist do not have a genre of Christmas at the album level. So is Plex aggregating all the genres that show up for a particular artist and if any albums have Christmas, then the artist as a whole is considered part of the Christmas genre?

How do I use the Custom Filter?

This might be the case, but I can’t confirm it right now.

Custom Filters are invoked in the same menu as the regular filter you are already using.

Thanks! The custom filter seems to solve the issue for now (by using Album Genre = Christmas). I was looking in the wrong drop-down for the custom filter and see now it’s in the first of the two drop-downs in the Music library.

I hope they add that sooner than later as well. left to creating smartplaylists in itunes ( which would i would really never want on my plex server other than that reason )
