Getting 3D (Blu-ray 3D-MVC) To Work On Plex

Thank you. AFAIK, Plex uses mpv. I don’t know if it supports 3D at all, but in their repository I did a quick search and found some issues related to MVC files. I don’t know if they were PLAYING these files in 3D or just as 2D though. It seemed to be related to Emby theater which I guess also uses mpv.

I guess I understand if mpv doesn’t support MVC, but I find it hard to believe that it’s due to a software limitation as both mpv and OpenElec are open source. This is possible via software, but there could still be something about OpenElec on a Pi that makes it possible only on that platform.

I really wish I understood this more…it’s hard to find much authoritative when it comes to what the ultimate limits/requirements are for 3D…:frowning:

This is true. However, I have muxed the Atmos/7.1 stream from the UHD version of movies into my 1080 MKV files via MKVtoolsNIX. That’s mostly just for fun, but I don’t know why the audio stream would care what resolution the video is that it goes along with.

I have no idea what the limitations on stream types are for .m2ts. I’ve never really used it for anything.

I can mux Atmos streams into MKV’s that never had it though as long as it’s the same length movie version etc. For example I took the Atmos stream off my UHD version of GotG2 and added it to my 1080 version… Same thing with Wonder Woman.

I was actually asking because I haven’t tried yet. I know the Pi is capable of full 3D MVC and can passthru DTS/DD 5.1 just not DTS-HD and DD True-HD. What I’m not sure of is if the embedded image of PMP has 3D MVC enabled (LibreElec has it as an option in settings but PMP doesn’t list it despite being built on LE).

@Audio_Guy I just tried out a few possible ways of getting 3D to work with a Pi and the results are great.

First the bad news, for some reason Plex embedded (based on LibreElec) doesn’t have 3D MVC enabled… why I don’t know, it shouldn’t be hard for the devs to add the option since its built into the underlying OS.

What does work is using the official Plex add-on for Kodi or the PlexKodiConnect add-on. The official add-on can be directly booted into and works just like any other Plex app, the other method imports your Plex server content into the default Kodi UI.

Both methods are able to play back full frame packed 3D and allow DTS/DD 5.1 pass-through. The only thing you don’t get is HD audio (DTS-HD, DTS-X. True-HD, or Atmos).

No, I honestly don’t think there is just one device if you want 3D. I suggest using a Shield TV or 4K Apple TV for a single device, that way you can have other apps along with HEVC and 4K HDR.

I would recommend the Pi over a Samsung BD player as a secondary 3D device. The app is more responsive and it doesn’t require you do remux/rename your 3D files, just use MakeMKV and name it as you would any other movie and you should be good to go.

A future version of the Pi may end up being the “Holy Grail” if you don’t need anything other than Plex. I know they currently have HEVC decoding working for 1080p content in Kodi 18 and I suspect the next gen Pi will support 4K and HDR10, hopefully the 3D MVC support is still present.

OK, you threw me off now…are you saying that the Plex app for the Pi can play everything INCLUDING full resolution, 3D-MVC??

The Pi can play everything except 4k HEVC content.

Can:

  • Full frame packed 3D-MVC
  • 1080p h.264
  • 1080p VC1 (with hw decoding license)
  • 1080p Mpeg2 (with hw decoding license)
  • DTS/DD 5.1 bitstream passthrough
  • DTS-HD/True-HD lossless decoding to LPCM 5.1/7.1
  • 720p/1080p HEVC on Kodi 18 (haven’t tried this myself so I’m not sure how well it works)

Can’t:

  • 4k HEVC content
  • HDR10 or Dolby Vision
  • DTS-X/Atoms bitstream or decoding

OK…but what OS builds are required to install Plex on a Pi and use it to do all this? I know this can be done with LibreElec and Kodi, but the goal is to still use Plex.

I’m not concerned as much about the Atmos at this point. My Atmos setup isn’t yet complete and I have a shield anyway.

I used LibreElec but I’m pretty sure you could use OSMC too. All you have to do is install the official Plex for Kodi add-on, it has an option to launch at boot so you can bypass the Kodi UI. Check my activity and you’ll see a more detailed post I made about it.

I take it you mean this thread?

Did you also see this:

Unfortunately, this didn’t work for me playing through nvidia shield. However, plex app on my LG tv picked it up but it shows it in 2D format and I have to manually select 2D to 3D.

OK, sorry for the very slow response. I FINALLY tried this even though I bought the BD players months ago…

I am able to follow your instructions and I can play a muxed m2ts file through my 3D projector. It DOES even switch the projector to 3D automatically! Love it!

However, I can not for the life of me figure out to get an Atmos stream muxed into that. If I take my MVC MKV file with Atmos it strips it out when I try to mux it. It will mux the file, sans Atmos. Frustrating…

Although I set the BD player to bitstream as well, mine too won’t play anything above DTS. I know that isn’t what’s causing my inability to mux Atmos into my stream, but it does make me think that even if it were there, the player wouldn’t play it anyway…:frowning:

…and all it would take is for Plex to add 3D-MVC support to solve all this…

So I’ve purchased the Samsung BD-JM63 and I’ve built my .m2ts file. It played in full 3D glory on the 1st try. However, it buffers every 10 seconds making it unwatchable.

Any ideas to speed up the stream to avoid buffering?

Some more information:
Plex is running on my Synology DS916+ (8GB)
Samsung BD-JM63
Size of the .mt2s file is: 32GB (Is the size the culprit?)

make sure the video is not being transcoded (check your plex web dashboard).

if it is, it is probably due to audio stream incompatible with that player. switch to an ac3/dts stereo or 5.1 audio stream.

It would be really nice since the LibreELEC is open source, for the Plex folks to take whatever drivers they need to make 3D-MKV work on a Pi and add it to the Plex build for Pi.

I mean…is it lack of interest or lack of ability?

Hi everyone,

I have a NVidia shield, and Sony 570ES projector.
I’ve a bunch of 3d content, for example
“The LEGO Batman Movie 2017 1080p 3D BluRay Half-SBS x264 AAC”

and

“Kong Skull Island 2017 1080p 3D BluRay Half-SBS x264 AAC 5.1”

In both cases I just see two images side-by-side.

Pressing the 3D button on the projector remote brings up “not applicable”, and i can’t figure out what to do next? help?

If you see two screens side by side, slightly compressed horizontally than Plex is doing its job. SBS/TAB formats are really just 2D video sent to your TV. It’s on the TV to combine those two images into stereoscopic.

3D-MVC or frame packing is different but that’s not what your asking about.

I’d say your issue is related to the TV settings.

Thanks for the note…

I’m using Plex with a Sony 570es 4k projector.
When I press the 3d button on the projector remote it pops up with ‘not applicable’… So I figured that the projector doesn’t know that it’s 3d content…

Any advice?
