Getting asked for remote watch pass on local network

recently (past few days to a week) i have started getting issues with my plex tv app throwing an error saying i need a remote watch pass even though i’m on the same local network as the server. i have changed nothing about the configuration of plex or my network but this has just started to pop up. The only solution i have found is to restart the laptop i run the server from but this is not a good solution to have to do every time.

i run the plex server from my laptop, it is on the same network as the TV. i do use a VPN but that has also not been a problem in the past and disabling the VPN did not resolve the error.

i am very novice on tech and network stuff so clear solutions to try would be appreciated.

I don’t know all that much about this stuff since I haven’t haven’t had to deal with it but I’ll just say posting your server logs and even the player logs will help the folks in the know figure this out. Also give as much detail as you can to eliminate guess work. What’s your tv ip address… what’s your Sever ip address? What model Tv? You get the idea.

On the PC running Plex Media Server, in Windows Settings → Network & Internet → Properties, make sure the network is Private, not Public.

If possible, configure the PC to use a public DNS server such as 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8 (Google), or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9).

i did the first step but the issue persists.

i am unsure how to do the second step or what that actually does security wise or anything

and it’d be strange that my configuration has worked perfectly for months but all of a sudden it does not work. i’m not sure if something has changed on plex’s end very recetnly to cause this

The other thing I would say is check your dns settings/whether they are working. DNS mishaps are tied to a number of Plex problems.

where should i go for this and what does not working look like?

Did you check the settings I mentioned in my first reply (public/private & DNS)?

If not, do so and report back how they are configured. It will help with problem diagnosis.

Your tv has probably been going “remote” but you didn’t notice. Last week Plex started enforcing the pass requirement on some SmartTVs. Try the network & DNS change that was mentioned on the tv. It’s in the tv settings under network settings.

What IP subnet does your LAN use?
