I will be more than happy with what was shown in Raindancing’s video, one centralised library with every tv show and film having an individual entry. Atm, I have duplicates of films that I haven’t bothered to sort because of the (hopefully imminent) release of plex 9.
Being able to watch a tv show or film from any computer or tv in the house from one- easy to use, and manage, library - is a stroke of genius.
Hopefully the remaining bugs get a quick and merciful death
OK, the please forget my remark. I knew I should've kept my mouth shut. Sorry, @nameundecided. :)
OK, thanks. I'm patient ;)
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I totally accept and understand where you stand regarding supporting other platforms schemas. For me, though, it isn't a matter of platforms - rather, I'm concerned or focused on not being too dependent on online sources for scraping (more than once). In essence, the nfo files are just XML formatted text with nodes for the various parts of the metadata. The XBMC Media Companion (it could be called Plex Media Companion for all I care) is just very useful to get online metadata stored locally. Anyway, I'll try to code a agent myself and if I suceed, I'll post it for others potential benefit.
I personally hate the nfo system, tbn files, etc. It clutters my folders up! I love the way the new media manager scans content now…it grabs (almost) everything I need as far as metadata (I do miss trailers, but that will come later I’m sure), and it doesn’t need to clutter up our movie/TV folders with random files to do so. Also, I have gotten nothing but high-res posters and fanart for the majority of my content, and it took NO effort on my part! I remember back when I was using XBMC and EMM…I used to think that was the way to do it. The end result was awesome. But the steps to get to that end-result, well… sucked. To install windows and a virtual machine, and set up EMM, and have it clutter up my folders was messy. Plex has taken away that pain, and has created something for the everyday user. We never have to worry about hunting down our own posters and fanart ever again! We never have to worry about scrapers becoming outdated, and we never have to worry about re-organizing our movie folders every time we want to try something new. I swear, I have reorganized my movie library 10 times the last six months for different pieces of software
I have a feeling that once this becomes public, there will be no stopping Plex, and third-party development also
Our format is XML based too :) It's just more detailed, and allows for the storage of more data, which is separated by source and can include accompanying media files like images. When we make metadata editing available in the UI, user-entered data will end up in there too. This means you'll be able to easily back them up and move them between machines. You can also dynamically recombine the metadata that's used in the database, so if you change your mind & decide you want Rotten Tomatoes ratings instead of IMDB ones, you can tweak a setting and the database will be modified very quickly. Also, Alexandria doesn't give up completely if it fails to get metadata the first time ;) It'll wait a bit and try again, so if a site's down for a few hours it's not the end of the world. Media will appear in the library even with no metadata too, it just won't look as nice!
And unless I'm missing something, you're still dependent on online sources - you're just using a different method of grabbing the data :P
Thanks guys for the replies. Appreciate it ![]()
I'm sure the new media manager is great. And I agree that for the average user, which is the one to target, less complexibility is definitely the goal. However, please don't forget the more advanced user - some of us actually **likes/prefers** to do all the convoluted steps ;) I may be belonging to a small minority in that regard, but still... :)
And I don't have a problem with having additional files adjacent to my movies - to me they are all but "clutter" and definitely not "random" files ;) But that is personal taste/preference I guess...
Well, I'm so looking forward to trying - it sure sound nice and good, especially the part about the dynamics. And once users are able to edit the metadata, I might consider dropping my current way of doing it ;) Please remember to allow bulk-changes, i.e. let the user select multiple items (e.g. movies) and edit the same data across these items.
Yeah, I'm dependent on online sources, that is true. But only once because I store the data locally after having scraped it. And I really like to handpick my covers and fanart AND to store them locally in a place where I can access them easily... :)
But OK, if you allow export/backup of the metadata and scraping of the local posters and fanart, I'm almost satisfied. The only thing I'll be hoping for is the ability to add an entry that indicate to me on which external harddrive the movie is stored. Will that be possible, perhaps for the users to add their own custom entries - suppose it will, but how will it be displayed skin-wise? :)
BTW, Russ. You say you get high res posters - are there new sources included i Plex 9? Put another way, for me nothing compares to the quality you get at www.getvideoartwork.com and I won't settle for less - sadly, I don't think it is possible to scrape that site. I might be wrong, though? And maybe other sources offer similar quality? :)
No, no new sources. However, in the PMM you can change the default provider. So now I get themoviedb posters by default instead of MoviePosterDB. The posters from themoviedb.org are very nice, and look fantastic on my HDTV
Posters from TMDB.org are nice, but not as nice (IMO) as the ones from GVAW. Take a look at this for example:
getvideoartwork.com
http://hwcdn.themoviedb.org/posters/1b4/4c537c675e73d632bc0001b4/the-joneses-original.jpg
I prefer the clean one, i.e. the one without the text…
But OK, I must admit that the quality of the TMDB ones are better than I thought…
Yeah I can see why you like that site… bit yeah I’m happy with the ones Plex provide, nice and easy
Who know, maybe a metadata agent could be authored for your aforementioned site down the road…
Hope so
This thread was amusing.
Good. But I thought it was informative ;)
Will we have the possibility to raise the number of “newest movies” from 25 to 100 ?
Will we have the possibility to check the unseen movies ?
1. Not in 0.9.0, but not to hard to create, so sometime after 0.9.0 is the answer.
2. You mean like an entry in the new second-menu? Like "Watch unseen movies"? If that is what you mean then no, nothing in GUI so far. Elan said it would take a couple of releases into 0.9 before stuff like this would be addressed (it's a crazy ass long list to go through) :)
If you don't know (I suspect you were asking about .9) that is already possible in 0.8.5:

Could plex nine have some form of a solution for individual films’ extra features, either in the initial or an eventual release? I have quite a few folders for films with “extras” folders in them. I end up with a lot of entries in my plex movie list for the Ricky Gervais “Extras” TV show that I have to delete. It’s all well and funny until… well, it’s annoying.
It might be nice to have access to extra features like documentaries and trailers within plex, otherwise I’ll just have to continue to clean them out. I might… end up creating a whole separate “extra features” folder for its own category in plex, but I’d rather continue storing them with the film they belong to.
Not in the first release, but it’s something we want to handle at some point in the 0.9 series. For now, “extras” folders will just be ignored - you won’t end up with lots of entries for the TV series
Muaha! That's a nice enough improvement for the moment. Thanks for the quick reply.
