I have 1.55 TB of disk space on my NAS (WD PR2100) and I’m getting the following error message: “There was not enough free disk space to start the recording”. As you can see, I have tons of space. I had 2 recordings to start at 8pm (just a few minutes ago) - one started, the other didn’t (with this error). This only recently started. I have made NO changes to my standard setup except for signing up for Plex Pass and installing the newest version of the Plex server that supports DVR (no quotas, simple RAID dual-drive, etc). Help!
logs right after the error please. it should say what directory did not have enough space
Which log or logs? I clicked “Download Logs” and it exported 129 of them. (I only now turned on the debugging log feature, so these may not even be suitable…)
Just post the zip file downloaded. @bigwheel might need to look at different files. If you can duplicate the problem now with debug set that might help. Also make sure that the "Allow Plex Media Server tokens in logs is not selected.
Ok, please no mocking - I’m not the only one who has shows being recorded …
Now that I’ve turned debug logging on I’ll resend the logs if the error occurs again. (Tokens were turned off…) Thanks
don’t see anything in log. which show was it? only need the Plex Media Server.log can you reproduce error one more time and grab that log right after.
The show was Stargate - SG1 (episode Allegience). Plex is currently re-recording the show because I was able to get it to record the remaining part of the failed episode (I deleted the show and rescheduled it). (Since it’s a partial recording, Plex saw the re-airing coming up and recorded it - Comet TV is showing 2 episodes a day at 8pm and 10pm). As soon as the error occurs again, I’ll upload the new log(s). Thanks for your help!
@BigWheel I believe there was an entry in the Plex Media Server 5.log.

Ok, like I said, I have 1.5 TB left on this NAS. How do I interpret / fix this? I’m (mostly) clueless about Linux/Unix and their variants. I’m a babe in the woods…
Ok, Plex has finished successfully recording the re-airing of this episode. But something to note: when it went to record it the first time 1) It was simultaneously starting up the recording of a movie at the same time (which completed successfully), and 2) I had previously set up the DVR to start recordings 1 minute before airtime and stop 1 minute after airtime (I have since zeroed those out just to see if it would make a difference). Not sure if that’s helpful. Like I said, if it occurs again, I will post the log(s). Thanks again (Addendum: Plex not only re-recorded the episode because it started late, but it deleted the partial recording afterwards. Plex for the win!
)
…and now Plex just mysteriously deleted 2 back-to-back episodes of Pawn Stars from my recording schedule (probably right at the time of the first show). The first show was to have recorded half-way through a movie I was recording at the time. I confirmed that the episode had not been previously recorded. I am not a happy camper. I may go back to an earlier build. I have 2 HDHomeRun boxes (4 tuners) and tons of space. This should not have happened…
Can you post new logs for the time frame the show was recorded and deleted?
I think the problem may have to do with Plex defaulting to the Videos share when setting up a recording. I’ve been changing this to the HDHomeRun folder when I think of it. The Videos share has Public set to Off, while HDHomeRun is set to On. About an hour ago I set up 2 recordings to go off at the same time and made sure to use HDHomeRun and they both recorded. I’m trying to confirm this by looking through the logs. I’ll edit this post when I find something…
…and, so far, nothing. I only see mentions of /shares/HDHomeRun, so that’s a bust. I know I’ve changed the destination folder on at least one of my scheduled recordings. Gonna keep digging. It’s not helpful that Explorer won’t let me search within these logs no matter what I do…
The “Plex Media Server.2.log” mentions the two Pawn Stars episodes that mysteriously vanished from the schedule early this morning. One of them is called “E18 - I Herd That”. (Doesn’t matter what the other one is called -
they both got “Cancelled”, but I’m not sure why…) I can’t make heads or tails here…
Actually, in Plex Media Server.4.log, it shows the same “out of disk space” baloney I ran into earlier. But the HDHomeRun share volume is being used and other recordings have gone in there fine, so this is a Plex bug for sure. “Not enough space left in the .grab” Help, Plex people!
Hopefully someone from Plex will respond but one thing I seem to recall from past posts on the forum was someone mentioning that Plex seemed to hold onto old record locations. They got around the problem by deleting the recording and setting it back up ensuring the record to location was set correctly.
Thanks. The settings are fine at this point and are being used (which is confirmed by the logs). I suspect it’s something else, but I’ll keep that in mind. I’m going to bide my time and wait for Plex. Fortunately, the only must-have show I don’t want to miss is Stargate, and I have a backup DVR solution to record that.
hey are you changing the location of recording after the show was already set to record to a specific location? or is this completely new recording set up? another user having a similar issue and we think it is something to do with that.
At this point I can’t remember. However, all my show “appointments” are now pointed to the HDHomeRun folder and the test earlier today (to record 2 simultaneously with the same start time) was a success. So, who knows? However, I may not be out of the woods because, as I stated above, the log seems to indicate that Plex tried to record 2 Pawn Stars episodes back-to-back (while a movie was being recorded), and they both failed even though they were headed to /shares/HDHomeRun. We’ll see what happens next…
I recorded a movie early this morning (and made sure to record a random 30 minute show during that). Right after those two were finished, 2 Pawn Stars episodes got recorded back to back. Everything recorded with no errors. Weird, but good. Like I said earlier, two Pawn Stars episodes (“I Herd That” and one other) both failed earlier even though they were targeting the right directory, so I’m not sure I’m entirely over this. Maybe not adding padding to the shows was crucial? I’ll keep an eye on this…
Ugh! I spoke too soon: The Stargate: Ark of Truth movie just tried to start at Noon and failed with the same error. It’s targeting the right directory too. Here are the logs. I hope someone can make sense of them
