Could Not move recorded media to destination

Server Version#: 1.15.4.994
Player Version#:

Plex Media Server.4.zip (397.3 KB)

Ok, I have a big problem here. My Plex server is no longer saving shows to my ReadyNAS server. Note that I’m only storing the shows on this server and am NOT using PMS for the ReadNAS to record my shows as the server CPU is a bit slow. I’m using a Win10 computer to handle all the heavy lifting. This started at the beginning of the month. Most recordings are not showing any errors…they just disappear. I looked through the logs today and found that Plex “could not move recorded media to destination.” This is happening on every recording. I watched Plex tonight while it was recording. It had no trouble creating a recording in .grab. But when it went to move the file to the appropriate directory, everything went south. I reset permissions on the entire share but still no change. I also noticed that Plex will show recordings with errors, but only the day of the recording. By the next day, those recordings that result in errors disappear.

What is going on here? It can make a file in .grab but can’t copy?? I’m not having any issue doing anything on this device using the File Explorer. I can move, copy or delete any file in the Plex TV show directory so it doesn’t seem to be a permission issue with the device.

What is more strange is that I tried to record a show I don’t normally watch just to see what was going on. The recording worked just fine and transferred into my library w/o issue. Only shows I’ve scheduled to record seem to be the issue at this point.

Help!

getting the same issue on my synology as well… I even unplug and replugged in my hdhomerun, upgraded plex server, removed DVR and recreated, rescan all the channels. Tonight I am still getting the same “Cloud not move recorded media to destination”.

and plex user has permission to the destination folder.

Please help, thanks

Edit: Interestingly enough, I just click record on two new shows that are in progress, and they recorded fine and didn’t get the error message. I am going to try to delete the existing folder in my DVR folder and see if that works…

Sounds like you have the exact same problem as me. I pulled everything out of the TV show directory to do the same thing you are trying, but still got nothing. It has been 3 weeks now without a single recording being stored. Makes Plex DVR completely worthless.

Hello…

I had three shows set to record last night, and I renamed one of the existing show’s folder name. The one with the renamed folder name actually recorded and saved. The other two were nowhere to be seen.

I have renamed all my existing folders… I will check of my recording works again tonight.

Maybe try to create a new folder, or point to something else. Maybe somehow the r/w permission didn’t get passed down from parent to child folders.

I did do a reset on all permissions, that didn’t work.?? I also
removed everything from the share, forcing Plex to remake
everything.?? It managed to remake all the directories, but didn’t
bother to put the recordings in any of them.

renaming the directory only worked for one show, but didn’t work for others.

I ended up uninstalling plex, removed the ```
$PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/ directory, reinstalled Plex and had to reboot the NAS…

last night my shows are recording again… :frowning:

Well, I did that and am now waiting to see if any shows get recorded. Few and far between now that the TV season is over. Thanks for the update!

2 weeks and counting with absolutely no help from Plex staff. So glad I bought the lifetime pass.

After re-installing and reconfiguring, I tested recording on a Daily news at 8pm. The first time it recorded fine. I watched it and deleted it (the folder structure is still there). Subsequent nights stopped working with the same “Cloud not move recorded media to destination”.

I think there might be a bug somehwere…

( i am running 1.15.6.1079 on Synology)

Just tried to record news at noon. It failed also with the same message “could not move recorded media”. But the folder structure were created at the destination… :frowning:

Still the same ole song around here. Windows PMS keeps failing. I have my Readynas handling all the recording directly now but I think that is a lot to ask of my already busy server.

ATTENTION PLEX SUPPORT. THIS IS A PROBLEM. PLEASE RESPOND. YOUR PROGRAM IS A FAIL.

My suggestion as I have made to other users that are wanting to store recordings on remote systems is to add multiple storage locations to your library. One point to something like C:\User\xxxxxxx\Videos\TV, and a second pointing to your NAS drive.

Setup recordings to record locally by picking the local storage location dropdown that will appear when you have multiple storage locations for a library.

Since you mentioned recording on a Windows PC you could then setup a schedule task to execute a bat file every 10 minutes to move the recordings from the local drive to your remote system. I use a one line robocopy command to accomplish a similar task:

robocopy /MOVE /S “G:\TV_DVR” “F:\TV” /XD “G:\TV_DVR.grab”

command is to move all folders/files that are located in G:\TV_DVR to F:\TV excluding the .grab folder.

Thanks for this work around. I hope the coders realize the multiple bugs and flaws they have here that necessitate such workarounds.

  1. The inability to move the recording to its proper storage location even though it can create the directories. This is a new problem as of the beginning of May.

  2. The ability to realize there is a problem, and compound it by deleting the perfectly usable temp file.

  3. Never informing the user that there is a problem (unless the user happens to be reviewing the record schedule within 24 hours of the problem).

  4. Deleting the recording records after 1 day even when there are errors.

That’s a lot of bugs and deficiencies for software that has been around for as long as Plex has (even the DVR portion). If one’s TIVO box was this buggy, they would be returning it.

I have also experienced this running Plex on a Synology NAS. I switched my recordings to Plex on a Mac, which worked for a while but then also started giving ‘could not move recorded media to destination’ after a while. On both my Synology and Mac servers, nothing had changed prior to the failures.

Has anyone figured out if the problem was introduced in a recent version of Plex and whether there are unaffected earlier versions, where the issue does not exist?

Up until May 2019, Plex was rock solid recording shows. (I have a HDHomeRun Prime.) Then some Plex update seems to have made this go from 100% reliable to 1% successful. I run Plex on my Synology and nothing has worked to make it reliable again. I’ve tried running Plex on my Mac and recording to a local hard drive directory and shockingly this doesn’t seem to work reliably as well. It is so frustrating.

Same problem here. Windows PMS is no longer successfully moving recordings to my wide open QNAP TV directory… very frustrating to see it’s not just me. It worked fine for a long time. This is one of the main value propositions I get from cordcutting with Plex and now it is completely in question.

Devs, please help!

Running latest stable server versions at all times.

Don’t hold your breath. As you can see, this has been a problem for sometime now and it doesn’t seem as though Plex is at all interested in fixing the issue. Your best bet is to do the workaround noted above which is basically storing the recordings locally as they are recorded and then setting up a scheduled task to move those recordings to the file server. Far from elegant, but it does work.

"Could not move recorded media to destination"

Same problem. I also have a PlexPass. This is very frustrating. DVR has been basically useless for about a month.

I’m running the server on OSX 10.15, trying to write to a shared disk on another local machine running OSX 10.14.

I was getting “could not move recorded media to destination” error for all my DVR OTA recordings, to local storage and NAS.

I fixed it by doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of all PLEX servers and clients in my network and the PLEX cloud.

Uninstall

  1. Completely uninstall all PLEX servers and clients from each of my 3 networked machines, using this procedure to remove all apps, configurations, caches, and logs: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/

  2. Delete all servers from plex.tv > Settings

  3. I run the PLEX client app on ROKU. I deleted it from ROKU.

Reinstall

  1. Reinstall 1 PLEX server, try a local DVR OTA recording. That now worked for me.

  2. Try DVR OTA recording to NAS from the same server. That now worked too.

  3. Reinstall additional PLEX servers, record OTA to NAS. Now worked.

  4. Reinstall PLEX ROKU app, record OTA to NAS. Now worked.

Good luck.

My system:

  • PLEX Servers: OSX 10.15, 10.14, 10.11
  • PLEX Clients: OSX 10.15, 10.14, 10.11, ROKU
  • All NAS is hosted by Macs (no NAS boxes)

this has started to show up for me as well - most recordings are just fine but some get the “cannot move” error
