I am a paid customer, lifetime (or was).
Well due to the recent apparent changed in the client gui it is now COMPLETELY unusable and opposite of functional.
It takes 4 clicks just to get to my movies and the 5 more click if i want to use the “shortcut” a-z slider.
Paid customers like me , rip our movie collections and music, and server them using your product. It seems you are more concerned in serving up online content and i am guessing making money from that.
That is not what i paid money to be a lifetime owner of plex for, and fine if you want to enhance it, but you have destroyed the usability around my libraries’ structuring, an can no longer easily view all movies or music or other content by the folders and media types using the client app, on the server side it is great, you see them all as you should…
Also you have removed my ability to view my content via plugins as it is no longer available in the current gui client.
I am now completely dissatisfied with the usability of the client, and the server is worthless by proxy of the client.
I have no confidence that you as a company care about the interests of the paying customer, and thus will be looking for your replacement. I know of at least 12 other people i work with that use plex, over half have paid, and i will stop preaching to the others to stay far far away.
Please voice your thoughts on leaving as well below, make our voices heard, as if anyone is listening…
maybe we can stop the future lemmings from spending hard earned money on it…
Also leave you suggestions on the possible replacements…
@ngadim I think you mean start preaching not stop. Because if you had previously bought a Plex pass I don’t think you would(before this) be preaching to stay away
Kodi and Emby are the logical choices that most people use who don’t run Plex.
I run all three but Emby is my primary system these days due to overall functionality I want/need. It pretty much does everything that Plex used to do and then some.
I too use Emby. I have been a Premium customer of Plex in the past but had network lag and dropping issues with Plex - Emby worked perfectly along side Plex on the same network to the same Rokus with no issues.
I decided to take another look at Plex since Emby for live TV has a downside when trying to get a TV program guide to load. It’s a lot more complicated requiring perl scripts, a scraper for the TV Guide website, xml parsing & etc.
After a very easy setup for the Plex server on my Linux server I was very disappointed to see that it would not link up with any of my Roku boxes even though they are all on the same network and they know / “see” the Plex server. They show the server as offline. Also - there seems to be no direct online tech support for Premium users - instead opting to force users into a moderated forum environment to wait for the largess of other users to answer technical questions.
So - I guess I’ll opt to stay with Emby - it fits my needs. It doesn’t have some of the nicer features and plugins sported by Plex but hey - if the Plex server won’t connect even the most dazzling plugin is worthless.
Same here. Probably hopping the same train. I can’t use all the words I want to for Plex right now. Civility and all… I’m going to be testing out emby this week for sure. Ashamed to be a lifetime plexpass member now and worse that I steered others to this plex ship in the past.
That sounds overly complex. You could have just used schedules direct which is built in and point and click to get EPG data. They are now incorporating Gracenote just like Plex is using so it will be much easier moving forward without additional cost.
As you noted it doesn’t have “content” plugins. For content you really want to run Kodi as that is the king of 3rd party content but it’s client and not server setup for this content and would need hardware that can run it like a Shield TV vs a Roku. The good thing about Kodi (if you can run it) is that you can use it to access your Plex or Emby server while making use of all the plugins available that it has. Sort of the best of all worlds for content if you have the hardware for it and don’t mind the setup.
I thought I was the only that hated the new interface. The Android app is useless. I dont need podcast, news, and web shows. I just want my library easily accessible. The Android app is ruined. Will downgrade.
Try a search on Youtube which should get you started and understanding the process which is unique the first couple of times you do it. Then you’ll understand repositories and such and will be able to add many other things quickly and easily.
Switched to Emby, beyond happy. I remember trying it out a year or two ago, and the Roku app as buggy for me (it kept doing a weird background refresh). Now it’s working great, and never looking back. They’ve improved it a ton since then.
A form user on one of the other forum threads posted the following - Is anyone knowledgeable enough to suggest a fix. I’m having the same problem. I installed the latest Plex server package on my Linux server and downloaded the latest Plex client from the official Roku libraries.
All I see is “unavailable” even though the Rokus know the Plex server is on the same subnet and can “see” it.
Plex upgraded itself to 6.1.1 on my roku3(8.1) and now both of my plex servers are “unavailable.” Plex finds them, they’re just “unavailable.” Web client works fine, amazon stick works fine. I upgraded to the latest PlexMediaServer (plexmediaserver_1.14.0.5470), restarted the service, still “unavailable.” …” craig_sierraglider_com
cayars - I did a quick setup on Schedules Direct with 7 day free trial. the setup in Emby was easy and quick. The local antenna TV guide looks very nice. Thanks again.
What are you talking about? No idea what this means?
Emby is no harder to setup generally speaking then Plex. Can be easier or harder depending on particular setup and hardware involved. Overall Anyone who can install Emby can install Plex and vice versa.
So again, what did you have in mind with your comment?
Regardless of setup involved, if one fits the bill and one doesn’t, how does that equate?
I too am a lifetime Plex Pass member who recommended it to others, and like a lot of people on these threads, I’m trying out Emby now as a replacement.
Install and setup was easy, and the forum members are friendly and helpful; I highly recommend installing the Emby beta app for Roku rather than the version on Roku store. I have noticed a few issues, but for the most part, after less than 2 hours of effort, most everything works very well. I have to point out though that if you use a Roku app, you may be transcoding literally every file in your library unless you have a very vanilla set of video files. Direct play works on about 10% of my stuff…
That said- as many others have already pointed out- there’s no video plugin replacements on Emby. Plugins are there, but nothing like we’ve enjoyed with Plex. If you’re looking for plugins, look more closely (and carefully) at Kodi. There’s a lot of pretty sketchy stuff in Kodi addons, IMO.
I really, really miss the “old” Plex (that had no issues with direct playing my entire library and had all those nice ad-free channels/plugins), and wish that management would reconsider and/or at least offer a ‘classic’ version for those of us who thought things were pretty damn awesome back a few versions (pre all the curated craptastic stuff, and the decision to kill off plugins).
I doubt very much that will happen- current Plex development strategy will not only address many of the nagging issues for their apps, but will also monetize the Plex product.
I also doubt that the number of people now complaining are anywhere near the quantity that will cause that to happen- but I will continue to hope!!
