GOODBYE PLEX, hop on the train to leaving plex in the dust

This new PLEX update SUCKS. I absolutely cannot stand it. Could it be any uglier and screwed up?! The wife hates it, too. Move forward and improve it or put it back like it was! I’m going to revert/downgrade it and stop updating or check out Emby. I’m a lifetime member and I.HATE.THIS.VERSION!

Blah, blah, blah. Every UI update someone always has to say “OMG WORST UI UPDATE EVER”. No matter what they do, or how flexible it is, it’s just never good enough for some of you. Buh-bye!

No. This one is terrible. It’s inefficient and a giant leap back. Looks like the interface reverted to a beta stage 10 years ago. Don’t get butt-hurt with your response 20 seconds after I made mine. It truly is terrible.

just tested the setup and yep still far more involved, and not impressed with the interface at all. all i can say is to each their own.

Plex was pretty awesome 10 years ago! I really miss the ease of use from the v0.8 days.

just saying, give the customer the options to edit or change the display and view of the layout and customization, not just a small subset of what you want them to have…this is why open source ends up winning, because you don’t get locked into what 1 person thinks the ui or feature set should be… let me decide the layout and menu system, it’s like a person designed it and never used it and maybe they had different resolution in the design template… you truncate my titles and make it sooo many click to get to the method i want use my media, and force so many views in front of what i want( ie, all movies, all music, etc) sooo terrible ui i wish to change platforms(rokuo/amazon apps) not sure why my android app has not been molested yet, i can still view plugins and media in a decent way…

omg, emby install on my nas in like 5 min, super easy , and have movies setup ready to watch…

-all the images for movie box covers 100%, no plex magic sauce issues
-excellent layout gui right away, with no config!!!

will fill in details as i go, but already better than plex, i am back in love with my media server !!

thanks to all who said emby!!

Absolutely, positively not just you.
We’ve moved away from all Apple devices, so now it’s Android and Xbox clients only, and we (everyone in the family) hate this ‘universal’ interface they’ve moved to (and the bugs on xbox). Plex has for some time now been our “last resort” media consumption platform.

This. A million times this.

Plex Classic; a platform built for the users who want exceptional playback of local media.
Features include:

  • no more shared libraries
  • no integrated online services
  • no dvr
  • no vr
  • just streaming content stored on a local device to local clients for playback

So Emby just went closed source…
Those lifetime passes just don’t pay the bills so hope everyone has a 3rd option because No. #2 is going down the same road.

fyi, some are trying although last time a big fork happened they all went dead in a year

I personally am not fussed about either Plex or Emby being open or closed source (though I appreciate others concerns in the matter).

What I care about is usability. A year ago Plex was still better than Emby, but since about 2 or 3 months Emby, to me, is the winner.

They both have my lifetime money, Plex’ has worn off by now and Emby still needs to earn their keep.

I just want a solution that works, and keeps on improving rather than going down the drain faster than yesterday’s beer!

I’m with you here totally.
Closed or Open sourced? Jeez does it work? That’s all that matters.
Oh and the reasons Emby did what they did to piss so many people (sad cases with no life) off are well documented.

There is much snobbery around the internet nowadays, especially with “old school” users.
Torrents being another classic example that “purists” get into a state over.

And apparently looking at this thread someone suggesting Emby is easy to setup means they must be smoking crack?
Maybe it’s the respondent who isn’t too bright.

Sure some elements aren’t as easy as Plex but probably only “difficult” for anyone under 10.
The sycophant seems stong in @MrGrimm

“All I can say is each to their own” or “Put the crack pipe down”
So each to their own if they agree with you it seems… if not troll them?

There are legitimate problems with being open source and (at the same time) paying the bills. Open source almost guarantees being at the mercy of donations and that doesn’t work for everyone (or most people). Not every product can or should be a Kodi.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if Emby is open or closed source. Going closed source does not mean they are going the ‘plex route’. It could mean a number of things, like: people are hacking their software to get paid features for free, that they’re working on something they want to keep proprietary, or other companies seem to be using their codes and designs in products they charge for. Open source isn’t inherently good and I’d say there are some legitimate problems with open source software, just like closed source isn’t bad and there are lots of very good reasons to go closed source.

Going closed source means no external development… so you’re now sticking to a limited number of devs which means more time spent doing their hobby project… eventually it becomes a choice between that and their first job. Once that choice is made… how do you keep the lights on?

This is a stepping stone towards that… just as it was for Plex

Hard choices ahead for them…

Very true, however in the case of Emby there really wasn’t 3rd party devs. There were a couple here and there that would find a bug or change a few lines of code to fix something before Luke could get to it but nothing big was going on with 3rd parties.

Emby had a “plex pass” type feature that opens up additional features. When the code was open it was easy to bypass this check and “steal” services you weren’t paying for.

Now with it being closed source moving forward this type of thing doesn’t happen and they can provide services they couldn’t previously. For example the next release has Gracenote data with it. Never could have happened as open source.

Much of the code is still open and can be compiled. They have/are just moving the paid portions into DLLs that aren’t open. Sort of best of both worlds if you will.

As long as they continue to kick out new features and fixes I personally don’t care about the source.

Ok , so i bought the full EMBY , i am very happy with it i can customize every thing i want , and the layout is perfect and 1 click to view all movie, music and other libraries like i want. tons of options that blow away plex, like editing movie box images and meta data if you want… very impressed to say the least, i uninstalled plex server and client apps, goodbye plex… yes emby has tons of options, but if you are not savy and it is too much going on just keep the defaults and move past the rest and it will be a simple 5 min install, but all those options is what makes it great because YOU are in control of how it looks and works… again super thanks to all who recommended it… have a great day, good bye.

the android app is not useless if you can use it.

Even if this functionality is less that what you expect from it doesn’t make it useless.

I didnt like it at first but things change. You need to change with it or move on.

It’s not useless, just not as good.
