GOODBYE PLEX, hop on the train to leaving plex in the dust

you got it in one.

about ready to give up on BOTH emby and plex, not going to have to go into my router and edit info.

I use a TV client and after testing Emby, I will be staying put with Plex. I know Smart TV clients are a bit dumb but it works well for me. No extra remotes etc. My TV remote does all I need 99% of the time, including my Satellite box functions. It’s simple and wife proof, so life good for now.

Though many consider it to be lowest of the low in terms of a client, It’s also as you say the simplest.
Back in my very early Plex days using Orca’s Samsung app (the thing that actually made me discover Plex) things were so simple and it fit my needs perfectly.
Sadly that TV came and went and that’s when things started getting complicated. Since I updated beyond a TV that supported that app it all went downhill fast and several years later I’m still looking for something to fully replace it.
Shield and ATV 4K both OK. Neither anything close to perfect despite the added expense and inconvenience of a separate box hanging out of the AV receiver.

I should add since those days my needs have changed slightly and HD-Audio is a must.
So when e-arc becomes more prevalent I will almost certainly be back to the native TV client. (LG currently.)
Maybe then things will become more sane again
because I really miss those simple early Plex days.

To mention I also use LG, for simplicity it rocks. Connecting a AV Receiver via ARC HDMI produces tremendous sound quality, if you use the right Receiver. My mother went from a Samsung
with Orca’s complicated UI to a current LG UHD and loves the Plex suitability, She’s 85, a great endorsement for usability. At present were not doing 4K via plex and relying on Upscaling engine so it works well in these days of change. Netflix is our current 4K consumption along with Foxtel sports 4K channel. So the Shield maybe tempting to pickup all these newer audio codecs, simplicity is here for now.
It has just been announced at CES that Airplay and homekit support is coming to LG TV’s

Please don’t take offense to this but If having to edit your router ports is too difficult for you to do then running your own dedicated media based server probably isn’t for you. BTW, chances are if you haven’t messed with your router and changed defaults both programs would have been able to do the port mapping themselves without your intervention (usually).

Running a media server isn’t “easy” but doesn’t have to be hard either. It’s a “labor of love” and if you don’t enjoy tweaking things, ripping media from disks, endlessly adding additional disks for more storage, helping shared users with their client setup and the like then here is my suggestions.

or maybe a couple of free sites

Well I disagree on everything but the ass part. I was being part that, because you were also. You didn’t ask for help but instead blame two different pieces of software for something that is out of their control.

Routers SHOULD NOT allow eternal access to your home network without your authorization. Sometimes the software can open the ports for you (they both try) but due to the router setup may not be able to. This is NOT the fault of the media software.

I didn’t say it could not do it, because you made a change. Go back and read what I said and note the use of “(usually)”. I agree it would have been rude had I said what you though I said. With all the installs I’ve done (more then 500 plex/emby installs) I’ll stand by that statement that both pieces of software can do this on their own usually unless a person has locked down the router. Some, not many routers will not allow UPnP settings but they are the far minority these days. Hence the usually, but of course not always

This software isn’t a simple piece of software. It’s essentially a web server, a DLNA server, an download server, an HLS streamer and many other things. It’s complex, very complex. It’s also part client/server because it can “talk” web, API or directly to other dedicated clients that can run on a wide array of devices from TVs and Blu Ray players, to TIVOs to game consoles to dedicated media streaming clients like Rokus and Android TV boxes. Not to mention smart phones, tablets and computers each with their own apps. It doesn’t get much more complex then this.

To expect to click INSTALL and run through a 5 minute setup and expect everything to run from both your LAN and externally is just plain wishful thinking although it gets close to this and actually does this for many people (they are quite lucky).

If you were to poll administrators who have setup Plex I’m sure you would hear high praises on initial setup because it really does simply almost everything. Unless you’ve setup real servers running things like just basic web services it’s really hard to understand how much Plex does for you.

Most of your post is a contradiction of itself. You run Linux because you like tinkering but yet complain about something simple like a router port map??? It’s just “tinkering” for you in unknown territory. Lets work together to make this less “unknown”.

Basically all I was saying is that it could have been a lot easier just to ask for help with the router then to say your going to ditch both

Now that we both “vented” a bit. How about we work to get your router setup properly?

Here is what we’ll need to know:
What is your servers IP address? Is it a static IP address or reserved address?
Click on the REMOTE menu option in Plex and look at the right side. Is the option enable or not for "Manually specify public port " If so what is the port number?

Next we need to know what router you have.
If you could provide a screen shot or two of the port mapping section that would be super helpful as well.

With that info it shouldn’t be to hard to get you some help and get this running the way you want!

How would I know it when someone uses ‘i wouldn’t of’ instead of ‘I wouldn’t have’ then claim they’re right in EVERY way
 ?

No feeling so right anymore? Wow, so angry haha!

Getting a bit personal and over the top. Let’s just try and help the guy get this fixed in the other thread.

In your corners guys

Guys (and Gals as applicable) - We need to keep this civil AND productive. There are users on the forum of all ages/skill sets/backgrounds. While this is an open discussion area, let’s show a little restraint and civility.

Some users may not to be happy with the direction/decisions that are being made. That is their right, and there are other software options available for them to evaluate/choose from.

Just because that may not align with YOUR priorities/choice doesn’t make them wrong or you right.

We each are free to choose what is the best option for our specific needs/use cases.

i wasn’t am am not the one in the wrong here. let’s not imply it again. again i thank you for the help with this.

Just attempted an install of Emby. Badly built and DOESN’T support my server.

I’ll give it a pass and if need be, shift to Kodi.
