I don’t know, if the single developer that built “Phlex” (and it works fairly well and exactly how we all want it) was able to do it, then it’s obviously possible and Plex should be able to make it happen. That being said, I’m sure there are other variables that I’m unaware of.

Yes it does allow the API to be used the same way, for example Channel 4 in the UK now support Voice Casting. However - there is no PUBLIC API that any developer can use to discover Chromecasts and cast to them, via the Assistant. So you clearly need to be working directly with Google to make this happen. I would find it highly unlikely that Google and Plex have not at least had a conversation about this. I don’t know where you say a comment about the API being too limited - the only comments I saw of that nature were several years back.

Well the devs said so themselves on the old forums … you can find it if you search.
Plus, you said yourself Chromecasting isn’t available openly, so… Pretty limited unless Google works with them directly.
I want to add my voice to this. Long time plex lifetime subscriber. Recently started using google home/assistant and would love this functionality.

Definitely proper integration is vital.
Phlex TV is really difficult to install and after achieving that it keeps stopping. Even when it is working it seems to be random whether the same command you used last time to play the music works again. I can’t get the casting to work either. It is great work from the developer but it needs a proper integration.

As a lifetime plex pass member, I am seriously considering moving to emby or another service.
Adding google integration should give me some serious reason to stay.
New app on ios constantly has connection issues and show content offline. And no, its not my setup. An old iphone with old version of PLEX works flawless…
So yea, add google integration or lose some customers.

To Plex administration:
Look at the tech world right now. Smart Homes are increasingly popular, and soon most TVs will have built in assistants. If you want to make sure that you stay relevant, you need to support these assistants.

Smart home integration definitely seems more popular than the VR feature that they were so gung ho about a while back. It’s also more approachable from a money standpoint.
I can see interactive games in VR, but watching a movie in VR? Does anyone actually do that more than once? The biggest hurdle for VR is how it closes you off from the world. So doing anything in VR with friends and family is almost anti-social. It’s a pretty big hurdle to clear for mass appeal.
Smart homes don’t have that problem. If anything you might could argue that it almost makes the home more social, especially if we can ever get the conversational aspect nailed down.

I’d like to add my vote to this! I’ve recently grabbed a couple of Google Home Minis for my flat and so very much wish I could tell it to play something and have it grab it from my PMS and throw it on my TV / play it through whatever speaker I say.
I’ve given it a whirl with Spottify free and a Deezer premium account (got 3 months for 99p) and love how it works, just wish I could have it doing exactly that but from my Plex library.
I know FlexTV is around and it works, but it’s clunky and it often fails to identify things- it keeps telling me I don’t have any Pat Benatar

Why was VR implemented before this? Surely tens of thousands more Plex users have Google Assistants than VR equipment.

Probably not before they started working on VR
On the old forums there was an active topic regarding this. One of the Plex team employees who’s name starts with a V stated that Google has not provided Plex and third party developers with the needed Casting SDK in order to get this working. But yeah, still…none the less…this is a NEEDED feature and Plex needs to take some initiative to personally reach out to Google to get this accomplished.

Honestly the only thing stopping me from making the big jump from Kodi to a plex pass is this. My family wouldn’t understand the change unless it came with a big benefit. Voice activation would be sooooo awesome!
