Google TV - DoVi/HDR10 Profile 7 constant spinning circle

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8854
Player Version#: Latest and previous

I have a Sony XR-55A95L which is fully compatible with Dolby Vision Profile 7 and Dolby Vision Version 6 but it cannot play any content with these details, the Android TV app will only display the yellow Plex circle for eternity without creating any error messages.

The Plex Media Server is not trying to transcode any of the videos, according to both Plex Media Server and Tautulli there is no playback activity occurring at all.

The TV is connected to a Theatre 8 sound bar system and I have turned on HDMI passthrough so the “Playback Info” on the client is correctly detecting and allowing TrueHD 7.1, when turning off the HDMI passthrough the “Playback Info” on the client correctly tries to transcode the videos because TrueHD 7.1 is not supported in that setting (as expected). I have TrueHD 7.1 Atmos content playing fine on other videos are not DoVi.

I have tried to play the same videos on older Samsung TV and it fails back to HDR10 as I would expect and the videos play without any problems. So this appears to be an issue with the Plex client player on Google TVs or specifically the A95L series.

I am happy to turn on the logging on the client player side but if I did that how can I get the logs off the television to pass on?

Some more specific information regarding the format causing issues:
HDR format: Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 7.6, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, no metadata compression, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, Version HDR10, HDR10 compatible

Do you have the “Force Dolby Vision Profile 7” support enabled or disabled in the app settings? If it is failing to start then it’s likely the device does not support Profile 7 as many devices do not. There are reports on Reddit of this TV experiencing this issue with profile 7. If you have the force profile 7 support disabled it should fallback to HDR

Hello Morgan, yes the Force Profile 7 was turned on. It does appear to fall back to HDR when that option is turned off.

Then its likely the device does not support Profile 7, there are not many devices that fully support it as it is meant for physical Blu-ray media and not used for streaming, we added that setting to force support in case the device does support it as there is no way for us to test all devices for support. For example the Google Chromecast with google tv is supposed to support it but results in playback issues when seeking or resuming playback so instead of straight out removing support we rather gave the user the ability to enable/disable support.
