Got Live TV working on Roku but can't even force closed captions.

I set this project aside last fall to wait on new features, but just started fresh again.

Roku Premier+
Win10 Home, freshly reinstalled
latest Plex (today)
Hauppauge WinTV DualHD with latest drivers (from WinTV 8.5 download)

I can watch, pause, rewind Live TV and I’m sure that recording will go fine since I got that working before. I was able to extract captions on recordings to *.srt which worked great. However, for live TV, even with:

Roku captions set to always on
language set to English
Video settings showing
Roku Captions Mode = On
Burn Subtitles = Always

… I’m not getting captions on the videos.

Any ideas?

I saw in another post that Hardware Acceleration may be disabling subtitles. Try testing after disabling the feature. If you don’t have it enabled, disregard.

Thanks Rando. HW Acceleration was not enabled (found it under Transcoder settings).

Search for an article on naming of external subtitles and check that your naming aligns.

You can also mux subtitles into mkv files using MKVMerge. May be worth a try.

Interesting as I have sort of the opposite problem. I had to alter the server ‘Languages - subtitles mode’ to ‘manually select’ (from always on) to get rid of subtitles on LiveTV. My experience has been that the only way to turn subtitles on/off on LiveTV is via this server setting - the roku settings seem to have no effect at all.

@rroonn I don’t have any problems with recorded shows, which I’ve got sorted out with postprocessing scripts. It’s only LiveTV I’ve got issues with.

@jillybean yeah, I’ve seen many more posts asking how to disable captions on Live TV, so I’m not sure what’s going on with my setup. Which tuner do you use, and which Roku model?

Roku3 & HDHomerun connect

Thanks @jillybean. I tried swapping in my old Roku3 and it didn’t work. I’m wondering if the tuner is the issue.

I’ve got Plex set up on a better-provisioned workstation now; whether due to program updates made in the interim or just the better machine, the captions are no longer a problem.

@gletchen - Glad to hear - likely both PMS updates and Plex for Roku updates - check the releases section of the forum - there’s been mention of caption/subtitle changes/fixes in both.
